What is the reason that the hammer has a tail on it?
I've seen speed-hammers that were flat, and the instructions for the JP trigger I have say to remove the tail on the standard hammer.

That part of the hammer is used in auto-fire as it interfaces with the auto-sear.  The hammer has the artifact shape.   It is not required, however, for supporting the semi-auto fire function.  The lower receiver for civilian models does not have the auto-sear nor support for it.   Some semi-auto trigger third party designers will often eliminate the "tail" to reduce hammer mass, increase hammer acceleration and speed for a given spring force, and reduce "time to lock".
