Hey Guys,

I'm new the forum and building my 1st AR. Good news is that I'm almost done. The bad news is I'm stuck on ordering a hand gaurd and not sure what I should get. I have a Rock River A4 upper, S&W lower and expecting delivery today of my barrel. (Shilen Drop-In Match Barrel with Bolt, 223 Remington (Wylde) Service Rifle HBAR Contour 1 in 8" Twist 20" Stainless Steel)

I'll be using this AR for Predator hunting and maybe some groundhogs. Most likely I wont be shooting over 300 yds but my farm allows me to shoot out past 600 yds if I choose to test my skills on some targets later on. I'll be shooting scoped only, no iron sights.

I prefer to keep the cost of the hand gaurd under $200. What do you guys suggest because I really don't have a clue on this particular part.

Thanks

There are some good choices in the under $200 range: Troy, Midwest Industries, YHM, are a few. Lots more options if you extend the price limit to about $250, but personally, I prefer to stay below $200 too. I wouldn't go with a quad rail for that rifle/purposes. For free float options I would look at MI's SS-series 15" and Troy's TRX extreme 13". I can't recommend any drop in rails other than the standard M4/M16 handguards since those are the only ones I've used.

It all depends on how the barrel is set-up to the upper. If you're using a Delta ring and a guard retainer behind the gas block/sight, you can use $20 rifle handguards. Are you using a front sight or what? I think most guys building varmint rigs want to free-float and have  low-profile gas block. That's a different set-up. Once you know wat you want to build, give us a holler.

The JP VTAC handguard would be my suggestion, if you can find one. Check Brownells and Midway.

Thanks Guys, I'm now on the hunt for a Free Floater. I'll keep you informed on what I get. As usual though, the one's that I really like are the most expensive. I gotta save a little bit though, not even done with this build and already thinking of my next!!
