I have a 3-prong flash hider on my 20" 5.56 barrel. Fortunately I live in a state that has no restrictions on how I configure my AR rifle. I've learned to keep it only hand tight because carbon and cleaning solvents accumulate under the device and will eventually cause corrosion on the barrel crown.  I now remove the FH after every trip to the range and clean the crown along with the bore.  The first time I did it, I had to scrap the carbon fouling off with a brass tool.  Later, I recut the crown with my trusty Brownells hand tool and now I keep the crown shiny bright.  I've also learned to remove the brush from my cleaning rod before withdrawing it after pushing a patch down the bore.  I want to preserve that nice sharp edge.  To get my 3-prong indexed the way I want it while hand tight, I sanded a little metal off the bottom of the crush washer.  Works like a charm.   - CW

Congrats on over complicating your cleaning process?

That’s not something I would do, but I hope it works out for you.
I am not real clear on how taking the brush off keeps the edge sharp, but then some people favor brushing one direction only.

I've never actually seen rust form there unless it was in some pretty bad weather.  Even old rifles that have survived in the constant drizzle in WA with round counts in the ten thousands.
Removing the brush to prevent the bristles from wearing that edge I'm assuming?  Be careful to not let the rod itself rub against the crown as that will do more damage.

This is just overkill.  Daub on some touchup paint on the muzzle, tighten that flash hider down properly (that's why it's called a "crush washer") and just shoot the thing.  If rust were an issue, the hundreds of thousands of M16A1s, A2s, A4s, M4s, plus the M60, M249, and M240 machine guns would have rusted to pieces  by now.
