Probably a dumb question but that looks like a mid length gas operating system on the Military Version of the H&K 416.  Would I be correct on that?

It is carbine length system, because it was originally intended not as stand alone system, but as retrofit upgrade kit for M4 (kind of like HK upgraded SA80 of Brits) and then evolved first in to conversion upper and finally into complete system. It may look longer, because railed handguard goes over gas block / cylinder.

Minimum barrel length for HK416 is 10.4". HK416C uses even shorter system to have 9.0" barrel. M27 uses same gas system as HK416, only it has hangduard that completely covers gas system (11" instead of 9")

However piston system "length" (distance from breech to gas port) not exactly defines if rifle will cycle more or less violent. My experience with 16.5" HK is that it feels like mid length, but 20" rifle length is smoother for me. Of course 10.4" version is more violent but some people that shoots those a lot for living (to stay alive), and I trust their judgement, says that HK416 10.4" is more stable in full auto fire than carbine length SR16 (some older version) with 10" (ish) barrel - can or no can used.
