| When we refer to the oval M4 handguards, is that the same thing as the "fat" handguards? Someone recently told me that they are two different things but that didn't sound right. |

And by the way, the M4 always had the double heat shield, the SOCOM barrel did not start showing up until the PIP around 2010-2014 . . . |

Car / round / skinny handguards = early single shield M4 / oval / fat handguards= later double shield (be aware that some commercial hg can be fat but missing the double heat shield) Fat can refer also to the M16A2 variant offered by CavArms and other mfg that would mimic the feel of the oval m4 handguards |

I listed a set of the M4 ones for sale once and shipped the person the skinny double ones thinking they were the fat ones.
