Fairly new to AR's and it's time to get some upgrades for my Rock River LAR15. My factory handguard is the classic A2 style that looks like an M16. I measured my factory hand guard at 8'' inches on the gun and 8.5'' when I detach it, ( includes slots that insert into the cap). My question is which do I buy, the 8'' or 8.5''? The specs on the gun say it takes a mid-length handguard, but for what i've seen, I have only found a majority of 9'' inch handguards classified as mid length. Has anyone seen or know of any quality guards in the 8-8.5'' range? Any help is much appreciated.

For my first set up I am going to go drop in, next AR I buy down the road will be better off to begin with and I will worry about quality when I'm out of college |
| Midwest Industries has a few different styles of drop in hand guards at decent prices. Link |

The 9'' measurement on some is likely just referring to the length of the gas system - no need to worry about it. |

Yeah, don't get so hung up on the inches measurement of whatever you took off your rifle. For the purposes of a drop-in handguard, there are three lengths: carbine, mid, and rifle. Yours is a mid. That's really all you need to know. If you wanted, say, a 12" free float rail on that, then yes, you would need to punch out the pins on your front sight base, remove it and the end cap, probably remove the barrel nut and delta ring assembly, install a new barrel nut for that rail, then install a lo-pro gas block and your new rail. Far more involved than the appropriately termed "drop-in" rails. |
