Anyone know a good paint to give the retro look to carbine length handguards? Looking to do the handguards in the low gloss black color I've seen on early SP1 carbines. Thanks |
I’ve never used it, but BROWNELLS claims their Aluma-Hyde II is good for re-finishing furniture.

Krylon Fusion in Satin Black, available at you local Wal Mart. Specifically made for plastic. Can says it dries to the touch in 15 minutes, but I'd let it sit overnight before fooling with it. Did a set of the Colt HGs on my son's CAR with it last year. Holds up fine under use.  Incidently, the HGs on my own 1977 produced Colt SP1 carbine are SHINIER, not less shiny, than current types. So were the first issue round M16 HGs, of which I also have a set. You might want to think about getting the Krylon in both the Satin and Gloss types, and testing on a scrap piece to see which is the finish you want. |

Don't do it! Alumahyde sucks. Your better off spending your time and money looking for nicer vintage furniture or spend it on lauer dura coat. The dura coat hardens at a lower temp compared to Norrels. WHile norrels has a good color, the dura coat is a comparable product. Just cook it longer and a slightly lower temp. |
