Anyone had any luck getting the rivets out of the handguards? Sure hate to mess up the heat shields any further.

Cutting down a set for mid length (which reminds me I desperately need the overall length of a stock set).

Thanks in advance.

I did a middy 607 and there was no need to remove rivits. I used a dremel with what looks like a circular saw blade, cut the HGs to length then went back in and used same to cut the heat shields back about 3/8 inch. The overall length of my HGs ended up being 8 1/2 inch,,BUT others have had slight differences, you really need to measure for length after all is assembled, helpful to have a 2nd set of hands holding the slip ring as tight to the receiver as possible when measuring,,cut them very tight, then tweek them till they fit.

Thanks for the reply and the advice. I'm planning on cutting from the rear of the guards----I see some take it from the front.

Worst thing is I don't have the barrel yet--supposedly they are in stock but who knows. Been referring to blue print measurements---best I can come up with is a difference of 3.375 between a rifle and mid length. Measuring the gas tubes for each shows that too within a few thou.

But I'd hate to cut these down, send them to John for refinish and find out I was wrong. I'm going to take your advice and actually do a test fit once/if the barrel arrives.

Again much appreciated for the reply.

i've saved some rivets from damaged HGs and there is no easy way to remove them without destroying the handguard.  they are twisted and glued in place and do not come out easily.

If you're cutting from the back do you have an end cap or are you going to try a reattchment?  The angles on the triangle grips are kinda weird.  I put mine on a barrel and chucked it up in a friends lathe then marked the barrel from the tool rest while turning the barrel by hand.  I imagine similar results could be obtained by using V Blocks

Mine are also cut at the back, and I custom hand made a rear cap that fits into the slip ring similar to the carbine ones available from TSI and primaryindustries on GB.Note,,no one makes a rear cap for the mid length rear cut hand guards..

I just measured two different sets of Middy HGs and the OAL length was 8  and 19/32" (A 32nd shy of 5/8) if that helps. That is absolute overall. Remember, you can make them shorter, but making them longer after you cut them is tough. Seems like you need to take into account also the thickness of the material you use for the end cap and subtract that also. Make a set out of scrap, crappy, cracked HGs first.

Think I'm going to go with the reattachment. JB weld and maybe a couple pins. I like your lathe idea---nice way to get a consistent mark all the way around.

Bet that looks good---kind of like a set of stretched original carbine grips.

Thank you for measuring those! I believe I'm in the ballpark of those numbers.

There is a way to use the TSI rear cap. Photobucket has changed the format and I cannot locate my project album.
You make a lip on the h/g's using the section that was trimmed away.
Ive got  spare TSI cap, but my shop looks like tornado disaster right now and cant find it.
Megaro got my personal middy h/g set, and I need to make another for myself.
I just might do another to show you guys how, even though I prefer modding the front end.
