I had ordered a PSA upper (through AIM) quite awhile ago, and had an issue with it. The slimline handguards heat upper heat shield did not have proper clearance for the gas tube. It would press on the gas tube, which caused friction between the gas key/gas tube. I have since replaced those handguards with RRA's (same diameter/shape, but better gas tube cutout and shields are tucked in better for more clearance) and have zero issues (except that the heatshields move, but I'll be using a dab of black high temp silicone on each to keep it from shifting fore/aft). However, before I switched to those, I had used the upper stock handguard without heat shield and it got hot quickly. So my "between swaps" mod was to use 3M 3382 heat reflective tape on the inside, and I was quite surprised how well it worked. Not quite as good as a built in heat shield, but WAY better than none. So if anyone finds themselves in a similar situation and want's to salvage their handguards (I'll definitely be keeping them and reusing them on another build), here's how it came out:
It's just two strips, length wise, overlapping over the center "flat" area. Then used a sharp knife to cut out the holes. I'm actually surprised how well it works!
btw: although not the cleanest job, those aren't tears in the foil (it's quite strong), those are cuts I made to close up air pockets.
