I am sure this subject has been beat to death but I am wanting to get a rail handguard
for my Colt A-3 Carbine, mainly to attach a grip handle.  Any thoughts on best quality,
bang for the buck$$?  Seems like there are dozens of them and I know of no place where
you can go just look them over to decide which one suits your needs best.

Thanks

Mike

If possible, check some out in person. WAY too many choices and oppinions on that one. See what works best for you.

I would like to check them out in person but I have yet to find a shop that has a decent
selection of them or for that matter, any at all in stock.

Fair enough. My next suggestion would be a gunshow in your hopefuly near neighborhood. Though I dont find many deals at todays gunshows, it can at least give me a hands-on without the guess work. Also, the shows always have quite a few AR's set up with different handguards so you can really get a feel for the thing. I've found that even when local shops, or shops online say their out of stock of one thing or another, they can still show up at the shows with plenty of items. I havent been a big gunshow fan for quite a few years now, but they can help in this arena. Best of luck, and post up some pics when she's done.

I guess the first question that should be asked is if you want a free float or non-free float handguard?

Would be looking for the non free float handguard.  This is an A-3 model Colt.  Not a tack driver for long range
shooting.  Wanting something a bit more durable.  More of a working model than a range bullseye special I guess.

If you just want a VFG, save the money and put it on your stock handguard.

US Tactical has Add-A-Rail systems, a short rail section that bolts thru the holes on your existing handguard, for the lowest cost option, $19.95. Well, actually they may be out for a bit, I bought the last three a couple weeks ago, and the next one due in is mine too.

Next up the curve, you can buy drop in railed forends, non-floated, from Troy industries, claim is 2 minutes to install, but mine haven't been delivered yet.

Larue makes a nice free-float railed foreend, and a nice vertical foregrip too, called the FUG, my rails are being installed now, but the FUGs are out of stock, and the next two due in belong to me.

I did get a pair of Grippod foregrips from US Tactical, and I like them. They are larger than most other foregrips, but that's because they have a mini bipod inside, that deploys with a single touch on the grip button, and the US Military just bought about 200,000 of them. Sandbox users report: not the best grip, not the best bipod, but definitely the best grip/bipod combination. If you get one, practice two hand deployment, the noise from push button deployment is audible out to 2,000,000 yards.

Don't sell the carbine short on accuracy until you have a couple hundred rounds thru it and have tested it out to medium distance. I have a pair of DPMS carbines, one of which holds 4 inches at 100 yards, not so great, but the other holds under 2 inches, measured, at 200 yards, much more accurate than I expected. It happens. I hope at least one of the Colts does as well, otherwise the bipod grips won't be worth the extra weight.

Your biggest problem here is going to be finding what you want in stock. Cast a wide net, and good luck.

I am glad you brought it up.
how much do you want to drop on them? thats the big question.
I got a great deal on a KAC RAS M4 drop in set. they look killer and I read that they are milspec(cage numbered, right??) the list price on them is like $250 or more. I got them for $130 LINB on a akforum, I could not resist.

but I read adds before where people said,"I bought this tacticool rig, and dont know why I did?" maybe they realized they were not going to be doing tactical entry opps, or concluded its unneccessary weight. then last night, looking at my sweet bushy, that is the right rifle for the rails I would think(T-marked flat top,M4cuts,govt profile chrome lined barrel, milspec buffer rig and LPK) and began to wonder......Do I really need this?

I guess I will have to get them put on and see what,I think. I might be singing a different tune, when I shoot it with them......
