| I didn't get an answer on the upper forum so I'll ask here. How difficult is to remove a vented free float tube if I need to clean out debris that gets lodged inside? I'm still dithering between vented free float handguards and the regular plastic ones because I'm concerned that something will inevitably get stuck inside the vented handguards and I'll need a gunsmith to dig it out. Do I have to remove the whole thing from the upper or can I just take off the gas block? It's the DPMS 2 piece vented free float tube I'm looking at. |
What are you predicting will get lodged in there?

Usually you don't have to remove the whole FF handguard with the barrel nut from your upper. I'm not familiar with DPMS 2 piece FF rails but I have a Samson 2 piece FF and a KAC 2 piece non FF, on both of them I just remove one piece which is the lower piece to clean under the handguard. I also have a LaRue 1 piece FF handguard on my carbine with standard FSB which in this case I have to remove my FSB then I loosen the lock ring of my handguard and slide off my rails, I don't have to remove my barrel nut to remove my rails. It would be easier if I have a low profile gas block so I don't have to remove my FSB every time I remove my 1 piece FF handguard.

Thanks for the help. If it's that easy I'll go free float. :)
Keep talking and I'll lodge my coffee cup in your ass...or at least one I don't want anymore! Dirt, leaves, mud, the kind of stuff that happens when you go hunting...it would also make it a lot easier to spray duracoat on it. |
Ya know what, I’ve been a member of this board for quite some time now and try to help out folks where ever and when ever I can. My response to your question was simply meant to inject a little bit of humor into the thread. Your description of objects possibly getting stuck under the HG’s brought a comical vision to mind and I thought I’d bring that humor to the board. Your comment………..
has just topped off the list of the rudest, un-called for shit that I’ve received yet from anyone here, especially from someone so new to the board. I’ll remember to never comment to any of your posts again. Quib |

Do you plan on rolling around in the dirt or mud with it? If not, I doubt your going to have any leaves stuck in it. Dirt? Maybe some dust blowback if your bipoding it. If thats the case, get yourself one of the Computer Cleaning Air Cans. They have high enough pressure to blow any loose dirt that might land in there. |
Umm...I'm sorry, that was meant as a joke. I didn't mean to be rude. I can't show you my body language with text. I value your comments...what you wrote down was a joke so I was joking back...don't take it so personally... |
I thought it was funny as hell. People on this board esp Team Members have become a little high strung lately and are steadly losing their playfulness. Any FFT so long as it is not a 1 peice can be removed. However if you do not have a low and I mean low gas block then the tube may not be easily removed as it will require removal of the gas block to do so. I used a speed block for my upper and there has been no problems but you can easily dremel a std or cut down FSB until proper clearance is reached and with a little help from a strap wrench from time to time you can pull your tube right off and clean and have it back on in under a min or so. Not rocket science. 1 peice tubes mean they are of one solid design that the barrel nut is built into one end of the tube thus removal would require the use of a vice block and you would virtually be breaking down the entire upper. 2 peice or more meaning that they incorporated a threaded barrel nut to mount the barrel to the upper and then the tube simply threads over the nut for complete installation. Thus to remove would only require unscrewing the Tube its self not the nut and all. If you need more info shoot me an IM and I will do my best with visual aids to further explain the process.

Well at the end of your comment you should have placed a and added "just joking" Mike |
"Can't we just get along" ![]() Here are some links to get you started to pick what FF handguard you like, it also shows how it's installed and you could make up your mind if you want to do it yourself or just have a competent gunsmith do it for you. That’s right, you can’t show body language on a web forum, hence the emoticons posted at the bottom of the “Post Reply” box. They're there to aid in setting the posters mood in his or her response. The If you had made the same response as: “Keep talking and I'll lodge my coffee cup in your ass...or at least one I don't want anymore!” or…………. “Keep talking and I'll lodge my coffee cup in your ass...or at least one I don't want anymore!” …….then I would have taken it as a joke, but because of the words you chose along with that particular emoticon I perceived your response in a negative way. That is why I took your response so personal. |
