I'm about to take delivery of my first AR-15 upper.

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/psa-20-hammer-forged-cl-mp-stripped-upper.html

I would like some help on purchasing a hard case. Figure if the rifle is fitted with a A2 stock what length case should I be looking at?

Thanks!

Standard HBAR w/ 20" barrel and birdcage FH with A2 stock is 39.5"

Need a minimum 42" internal length

I'd recommend a Plano AW 42" case (it's 42" INSIDE).  Definitely not Pelican tough... but FAR cheaper than Pelican and definitely tougher than a range case (airline approved, as well). You can usually find them on Amazon for under $100.

Pelican 1720.
That's what I use for my 20" AR.

I know you asked about length, but thought I would offer this case advice.

never head of skb until I started looking, but found them to be highest quality and priced fair.

Either SKB or Pelican.  Both are fantastic cases!  SKB are a bit more money but either way you cant go wrong.  They will last you for YEARS and you can buy extra foam if you want to use for different guns to take to the range or travel.  That said make sure NOT to get something with Pick n Pluck foam.  Get solid foam and either use an electric knife (good) or get an inexpensive hotwire table (Best).

Pelican 1720  Est. $200 w/ foam*  http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1720
Pelican IM3200  Est. $220 w/ foam*   http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail_storm.php?Case=iM3200
SKB 4214-5  Est $230 w/ foam*  http://www.skbcases.com/industrial/products/prod-detail.php?d=s17&id=606&s=l#.UyJXdPldWaU
