Sorry if asked before, but I am still trying to understand Head Space in an AR and if it is not correct how do you adjust for the proper space.

I am going to buy a basic upper and plan to add my own FF guard and etc.  I plan to take the upper apart.  I have never done this before and was wondwering if I have to worry about head space on re-assembly?

I read some of the data avaliable on the ARFCOM, but it seems HS is built in at the factory and using a go-nogo gauge is mearly checking the factory.

Thanks in advance for advice.

AR’s are different from most rifles.

In AR’s, the headspace is controlled by the barrel extension (which is pretty much permanently attached to the chamber end of the barrel) and the bolt.  Simply removing the barrel from the upper (without touching the barrel extension or replacing the bolt) and then reinstalling it will have no impact on headspace.

If the headspace was correct to begin with, it’ll remain correct.

Thanks,

Based on the way I thought the upper is assembled, this must be correct.  Without getting into the upper, I could not figure out how the HS would be adjusted or changed.

Thanks,

I don't know about everyone else's experience..but both talented gunsmiths I have known over the years and the other haveing built up about 100 rifles, have said they have checked headspace on tons of weapons and never found one to be out of tolerance.  I would imagine someone building a new rifle would be fairly safe.
