I'm working on an AR build (my first). I've bought a new BCG from Surplus ammo and a new barrel assembly from Stag arms. Should I worry about checking the headpace? Or is it necessary on a new build? The caliber is 6.8 spc and I've recieved mixed opinions on the subject. The bolt seems to go into battery just fine. I just dont wan't to spend the money on the gauges if its not really necessary. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Greg If I couldn't borrow a gauge, personally I'd just shoot the damn thing and see if there is a problem, but its probably best to headspace it since its a bit of a franken gun. |

If you're really concerned, get or borrow no-go or field gauge and if the bolt closes on it, you have a problem. At this point, the ONLY things you can do is either replace the barrel with barrel extension (most likely cause) and/or replace the bolt. Otherwise, there is nothing you can do to adjust headspace on an AR unless you have the equipment necessary to start replacing barrel extensions and reindexing gas ports.
On a new assembly, with a new bolt and new barrel/barrel extension, I wouldn't worry about it. The most I would do, and this is only if 5.56 ammo was tight or sticking in the chamber, is borrow or rent a chamber reamer and make sure that you have a 5.56 NATO chamber. Otherwise, shoot and enjoy. |
