I built my first lower for a dedicated 22 LR upper.  Everything went together great and it works perfect.  Now I want to build a complete rifle.

I don't understand headspace.

Should I get the barrel and BCG from the same manufacturer?  Do I still have to have the headspace checked?

How do you correct it if is is not right?

a million and five threads on this.  google search it.

In short, your best bet is too make sure your headspace is in tolerance.  Out of tolerance can cause premature wear or worse on your equipment.  It is measured from a datum line on the shoulder to the bolt face.  It is not permanently set at the factory unless you use the bolt they used to measure it against.

How to change it?  Change the bolt.  Ream a stainless or unlined, untreated barrel, send barrel back.

Reaming a treated or lined barrel is not a good solution as you would ream off your lining or treatment.

Buy head space gauges, or take to a professional.  You would need GO and NO GO gauges to properly check a new build.  The field gauge would tell you if your setup was worn out or still safe to shoot.  Not if it was in tolerance in a new set up.

Good luck and google search is always helpful.

Thanks for the info Lug1.

I did Google this topic, but there was too much information for me.

However, your post clarified my question.

Thanks.
