Anyone had any experience with the Surefire/SGM Tactical Sonic Defender Ear Plug EP3? Good, bad, so-so?
I'm also curious about the Smartreloader Electronic Stereo Earmuffs SR112

This is exactly why I made this profile, Im thinking about getting the ear pros but am not sure how effective they actually are. im the kinda guy who likes his hearing and when at the range use softies and muffs. Hope you get some good responses. I'm hoping . . . |

The SF ear plugs are badass. Comfortable and they do a good job of blocking out sounds. I also use Sordins or Comtacs, no experience with the headset you have.
You should double up on ear pro. It's your hearing.....when you lose it, it's gone. It's best to be paranoid about it. |

I used a pair of my brother's EP4's which have 3 "flanges" on the part that goes into your ear vs the EP3's which have 2, while shooting this weekend. (According to SF the 4's are for those people with larger ear canals. They both have the same NRR.) I was very pleasantly surprised by them. I shot a 9mm with the little "stoppers" out for quite a while. They were very comfortable and blocked the noise surprisingly well w/o the plugs and I could still talk to him easily. We then shot the AR a bit before it got dark. I put the little "stoppers" in for the rifle and was still very comfortable. I liked them enough that I have a new pair of EP3's in my range bag now. I don't have any experience with the other. |

The pair that belong to my brother were larges I believe and they were fine. However, I ordered medium as SF's 'site said that most people would wear this size. When I tried them they seemed fine. I actually couldn't tell the difference but I was going by memory on the large size so I couldn't compare side by side and I haven't been to the range yet with the mediums. I actually just put them in now to assess again. They feel fine. I do wonder though if the 3-flanged 4's might seal off more sound as I would assume they are longer- but as I noted they are rated for the same NRR. I didn't go through the measurement exercise I have to admit though..............
I'll try to do some shooting tomorrow if time permits and I'll get back to you. Quoted:

| The different sizes pertain to the jelly portion that fills out your ear bowl and keep the plugs in place. The stem that goes in your ear is the same on all the sizes. I have a set of the EP4's that I got for Christmas along with a set of Howard Leight muffs but I have yet to get to the range with them yet. |

I had my wife measure my ears as directed by SF, and I'm a big guy, but the inside of my ears call for a small size, I bought two pair, but haven't been able to try them yet, if they work as well as others say they do, it's going to be really nice to not have to wear muffs!!!! IMHO Regards tEN wOLVES |

Ok- few days later than I had hoped but I got out today to do some shooting. I shot the AR with them in from inside an enclosed bench house with just my port window open and the entrance door ajar- I had the stoppers in obviously. |

I like these, they work well, are fairly slim, the batteries are replaced from the outside and it has a input so you can listen to an MP3 or radio or what have you. Just saying.....

Howard Leight Electronic Stereo Ear Protection Those are the muffs I have as well. Whenever I shoot indoors I plan to use the surefires along with those. Amazon has them cheaper than that site by the way. |
