What's a heavy buffer good for in a semi?  I know it slows down auto fire... but it's useless in a semi, right?

It smooths out the cycle, and there is a different feel to the weapon.  While its not "needed", there is certainly a difference.  

If you plan on using it as a weapon, instead of a gun, make sure you check out the loads and ammo you use to make sure your AR likes the change.  Light/ weak ammo may not cycle all the time.
