Has anyone ever owned and operated one of these? (AR15) Not the one with the crank, but the other that just has the spring.  Do they work?  How hard are they to set-up and operate?

Just learn to bump fire.  For me the interest was brief when I figured out how much it was costing.

bump fire?  As in.......I assume you mean leaving the stock loose on the shoulder and letting the gun and finger react the same? Am I even close?

Bump fireing from the shoulder is hard, I got my Colt to bump from the shoulder yesterday, 3 rd burst is all and not too consistent. BF from the hip is the easiest. I got JP Enterprise springs  in my Colt and it lightened the trigger pull lots, much easier to BF. But yeah, you are right on the money, just type in Bump Fire on the net and you can see videos and instructions to BF. I've got it down pat. Have fun. Billy

I have tried the Hellstorm, Hellfire, TacTrigger, etc.

They all blow!

My friend put one on his SKS. Didn't work. We called the manufacturer and they told us to send the receiver in for a "modification". When we got the receiver back, the thing worked even worse!

Forget all of them. I just work my trigger finger as fast as I can...
