I have been lurking at local gun shows for the past year or so contemplating buying a semi-rifle.  I want one for a couple reasons.  One as a hobby, one because I fear in the not so distant future I may not be allowed, and lastly because I WANT one.  That being said,  I am looking for quality.  Money is not an issue, except I do not want to waste or over buy/compensate for my desire to own a nice rifle.

I have been looking at LWRC A6A3, 16" QD rail and Vltor stock to start.  I want to add 4x EO or Trijicon optics, but that can obviously be done separately.  I want all black, no OD.  I also have seen some M&P 15's I liked.  A local dealer has recommended for me to get a Stag Arms Lefty since I am obviously left handed, but I am ambidextrious (sp?) so I am concerned with going with a dedicated left hand rifle since resale would be potentially be an issue.  I see no reason to have to have a lefty...

I hear that all lowers that are mil-spec are very close in quality... So many brands... HELP!

I'm a lefty and I have no problems shooting a standard AR. All of the ones I own are standard but I have added an ambi selector to just over half of them. Maunfacturers that will get reccomended are Bravo Comapny, Colt 6920, Noveske, Daniel Defense, LMT, Sabre Defense, Knights Armament, and a few others. I own a few of the ones I mentioned and they have been extremely reliable and have top notch quality..

ETA: I do own a couple of LWRC's but they are short barreled rifles. If a piston is what you want then IMO, they're GTG..

I am right handed and left eyed .   I shoot both lefty and righty (scopes righty, irons lefty) and I have zero problems shooting lefty with a right handed AR.

If money is not an issue then I would look at Noveske and LaRue, then COLT, BCM, LMT.

I would do what I did and just make sure you build it enirely yourself that way will know everything about it.  I mixed match a mega billet reciever combo, dd omega x 12" rail, noveske recon barrel, youngs nm BCG, and a magpul acs stock.  LOVE IT!

It looks like most on here are recommending I build, not so much as from scratch as in the lower, but in putting together a built lower and upper, then adding the goodies on as I go.  I can appreciate that.  I am so new that I am a bit overwhelmed with all the considerations, and even then I don't really know much.  Maybe I should just try a pre-built, upper tier (level 1?) company and see how I do?  I would love to build my own as I am quite good mechanically and with my hands, etc., but am a bit apprehensive about doing that right out of the gate.  Debugging my own build sounds out of my league for now if I ran into issues (although this board could probably help solve most anything).  I need to get the book one member recommended for understanding the whole AR from tip to toe.

WOW!!! Money is no object, must be nice!!  If you want to adopt me I am available, lol!!!  I just purchased a Colt LE 6920  and couldn't be happier. You really need to sit down and think about what you are going to use the rifle for and buy one that fits your needs and not the needs of someone else, or something that looks cool.

Well, I don't have infinite $$$'s to spend,  but I am willing/able to spend more than the average first timer (I am assuming of course)   I really wish I knew someone in my local area that could assist.  I see lots of stuff I like.  I admit that I am influenced by very tacticool looking equipment. I know that may turn many of you off, but I have to be honest.   This will be a hobby and nothing else.  I do not see myself going into battle although if the economy continues, who knows what may happen.  I do want something very, very nice since I will not be collecting a safe full of these as others here probably do.  I want it to be accurate, but I will not be doing match shooting or spend my waking hours wondering why I can't get 1/2" groups at 200 yards.  I love very good quality hardware.  I can see it, feel it, smell it, and appreciate it.  Sort of like a very fine women.

I think the more I think over this the harder it's going for me to pull the trigger, ha ha...  I don't know what I need because I don't really have expectations of using it more than at the range, etc.  But, like anything else, I might change my mind once I get going with this.  I do still like to hear peoples ideal choice if money is no option, but lets say for just the rifle, no optics or extreme grips, etc., anything under $3000 I seriously would consider.  So far it looks like Colt and LMT are pretty up there for single source.  I'd prefer to be able to buy from a semi local dealer rather than online...
