Hello all,

I've been toying with the idea of getting an AR15 but as I'm sure you all know there are a ton of variants and companies making them now.

I'd like something compact, collapsible stock, ~16" barrel, that is reliable and reasonably accurate.  I'd like to stay with .223.  I don't need a heavy barrel, or sub MOA accuracy.

Are any of the lower priced ~$1000 range levels of these worth buying and ready to go out of the box?   I see Bushmaster, Stag, DPMS, Rock River, Colt and probably some others make versions in this price range are they reliable and accurate out of the box?    I could probably build one from the ground up, but it may be more hassle than I'm willing to deal with it and end up being more expense.

I can't see spending much more than $1000 for one of these since Wilson combat offers a couple models in the $1600-1800 range and if their rifles are anything like their handguns it may be worth it to go that way anyway.

I did a site search and didn't see too much as the search only let me go back a month, and I'm sure it has been asked a lot.  In what I did find it seemed like Colt and RRA were frequently recommended.

Thanks in advance

Todd

I am an AR newb too. I asked the same questions. I went with a Bushmaster with a 20 inch heavy barrel. This also happens to be one of the cheapest configs out there. It has been 100% reliable after the break in period and is rediculously accurate. I did however change the trigger as the stock Bushmaster trigger sucked. Rock river has a better trigger and a solid reputation.

try a search, there are LOTS of topics and opinons on similar thoughts and questions

Stag, RRA, and Bushy's are my prefered for the price and quality and availablility--all are under $1k complete

while WC makes great 1911s, thier ARs are nothing special and not worth the price tag imo

I was kicking back and forth between RRA and CMMG for a few months. Eventually ordered the RRA Elite CAR A4. Since I live in a ban state, it was going to cost about $125 for CMMG to modify theirs to where I could buy it, but RRA didn't seem to have any upcharges for doing that. Plus, CMMG had a slightly higher base price and RRA has their holiday discount going on now.

I still like the CMMG's factory customizability and have heard almost all positives about their products. If I ever relocate to a free state, I may very well get one. However, I couldn't justify paying the extra money and RRA seems like it's a fine product as well.
