Got it down to like 5 rifles. This will be my first MSR. I am value oriented and like the best bang for the buck.

What/how much I plan on using it-  Maybe once a twice a month plinking when I visit in-laws out in the country.  Maybe 1-2 times a year Varmint hunting with buddy.  Plan on shooting mostly STEEL ammo unless im Hunting.  I value accuracy and ease of upkeep/not breaking down the most, keep in mind how much I get to shoot.  I will be using a red dot and sometimes a scope, so I dont value the iron sights that come with some of these guns that much.

Prices will be after FFL and or Tax/shipping

Smith and Wesson M&P15OR Rifle $750

http://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/76379/c/semi-auto-rifles/brand/COLT   $925

DPMS Oracle $580 with the free 4 mags and cleaning kit!

Del Ton Sport $600

Colt M4 Carbine 5.56MM 16 inch M4 A3 w/removable carry handle $936

Palmetto State Armory M4 16-inch 556 MIL SPEC  $640

Thanks for any advice and help you guys can give!

Welcome.

I would advise you purchase the Colt- "Colt M4 Carbine 5.56MM 16 inch M4 A3 w/removable carry handle $936"

$936 for a 6920 after tax and FFL seems like a bargain.

Lots of posters on this site will recommend a colt over just about anything. Take any answers here with a large dose of salt.

Any of the weapons mentioned are a viable option.

I would stay away from the DPMS and the delton, but that's just me.

Agreed, and I am never that guy to blindly recommend a Colt.  I just thought that seemed like a pretty good bargain after taxes and fees for a new one.  Typically they have been around $1100

In before the usual suspects with resale value, and the investment posts

I usually dont recommend the Colt because they are overpriced for what they are... but in this case it looks like the Colt is a decent deal without knowing exactly how the  Palmetto State weapon is configured. I have not handled a delton but  i would stay away from the DPMS.. they make a good .308 AR but the 5.56 seems  pretty flimsy in the furniture dept.

It is a very good price on the colt, I'll give that.

Of the ones you listed, the Colt is by far the best. Some may say the others are just as good, but even if the are ( which they aren't), they don't have the resale value of the Colt should you ever decide to sell. The PSA and S&W are good rifles which would fill your stated needs well. Stay away from the Del-Ton and DPMS.

They will all do what you want.  Colt is over rated these days, good rifles are everywhere.

Remember, opinions are like assholes...  Everyone has one.

"I value accuracy and ease of upkeep/not breaking down the most"

Colt  MPI/HPT tests every bolt and barrel, none of the others do. That plus the brand name(for resale value) would make it my choice of the 5 you offered. That being said I'd buy a DD, Noveske, HK, LaRue, LMT over the Colt, but most of those are in a whole other price range.

Colt, S&W, or PSA. Personally I would go with the Smith and snag some extra ammo and pmags. We are in the golden age of affordable, quality AR magazines for the time being.

If you think you'll sell this gun eventually, get the Colt for name recognition.

I'd personally get the PSA and put a Geissele trigger in it, and would still be under the price of the Colt.

Pretty much my thoughts too.

S&W or PSA and get a good optic, Colts are over rated. If you shop PSA you could build a rifle for around 500 and use the saved money on mags, ammo or optics.

Colts are overrated, especially on this site. And I do own 2.
The Delton and the DPMS you have listed I would not do.

LashLaRue is correct about Colts being overrated, but wrong about Del-ton.  I own 2 Del-ton's and they are very high quality, accurate and shoot any ammo I throw at them, fit and finish is better than PSA.  Best value in the AR market.

I've owned several Deltons. Fit and finish had always been fine but accuracy been really inconsistent.  Still have a Delton upper that shoots great but I have had 3 others that were 3 to 4 inch shooters.  Horrible and probably won't chance it again.
