So im sure you guys get this all the time but im having trouble picking my first AR, I do however have it narrowed down and I have a few questions that may narrow it down even further. I have narrowed it down to buying a Rock River Arms AR, i feel as though they have the best product for the money and they seem to have what it is im looking for. Here are my options:

http://rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=599

http://rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=217

with some mods like flip down front sight and a quad rail...

http://rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=628

So I guess my question is what do you guys think? what would you go with? I do have some questions though...

1. I've read that a CAR is bad compared to standard setups, this is kind of leading me away from the first option.

2. Is it worth the extra $40 bucks for a chrome lined barrel, I imagine it is, but this worries me about getting one without such as my other two options.

3. Does any one know the differences in the Tactical, Entry, and Elite Operator II? They basically look like the same rifle, i imagine the Elite is better then the tactical in some way though

I know it al depends on what your going to be using it for, in my case its recreational shooting, but I may want to use it for a few competitions down the line, nothing crazy serious though, just some fun stuff it it comes up. So i need the gun to perform in that area which im sure all will do. The most important thing is I would love for this gun to last me the rest of my life, i have no intentions of getting rid of it. My dad is getting it for me for my college graduation present/ birthday/ christmas, haha, so i would love to be able to have it forever and even possibly gie it to my kid someday. I think that is why im freaking out so much about which to get. Any helo would be awesome thank you guys so much. Sorry for the book.

Rock River makes a fine AR15. They do have their loyal customers who stand behind their product. I did look at the two rifles you posted on this thread. I hope I can explain this in the best way possible. In my personal belief I would advise you that neither of these rifles are the best bang for your buck. I did a quick search of other rifles that I consider mid-tier rifles and found better rifles for the same or less in price. I have found a Colt 6920 for $1050.00 and a Stag Arms for $780.00. I believe the Rock River is closer to the base model 3 that Stag offers this does not include the plus package, which will make it closer to equal to the Colt 6920. I am not a fan of Colt due to the fan club on this site. Although when we look at the specs between the two rifles I would consider the Colt the best bang for your buck rifle right now at the price range you are currently in. If you wanted to spend less I would buy a Stag Arms and buy whatever optical you wish to have and put it on the rifle.

If you are 100% sure you want a Rock River it will be a good rifle. You will enjoy having it and it will last you a very long time. Congrats on earning a degree....

I "second" your post. Rock River make a good, durable, and accurate AR.

I own a few and I can say that they are good shoting AR's.

Yes....Rock River does not make true 100% mil-spec AR's. But for me, mil-spec is good but it gets overrated.

If you do end up getting the Rock River you won't be disappointed.

Yes, get a chrome lined barrel.

The only difference between those 3 models is the hand guard. I suggest looking at the Operator 3. It comes with a brake and a smooth free float mid length handguard. They offer rail sections if you want to mount a light or something else on the handguard. I suggest this because it gives you more freedom for hand placement vs the handguards on the 3 options you suggested, and you won't have to spend any extra money on rail covers. I've been there and it's money that you would rather spend on optics or something else.

Awesome, thank you guys so much.. I think I settled on the RRA Operator. Yes I did look at Colt and Stag, Stags were nice but I just keep hearing good things about RRA, not that there's a lot of bad things out there about Stag. The Colt... well it just seemed as though I was paying for the name, I know they too make an amazing Gun, but it seems like you can get more for your money elsewhere. Im not huge into Mil-Spec so that wasn't an issue for me, I know RRA will go bang when i pull the trigger.I can always swap barrels for a chrome lined down the road, for now a Chromoly should work fine. Thank you guys for the input, helped settle my mind a bit.

Josh, I've been around the AR platform a long time, Rock River is a very fine AR, A little history, If my memory is correct, (in my 50's now) brothers Mark and Chuck Larson worked at Springfield Armory in the 1980's, left there and went to  work at Armalite / Eagle Arms in the early 1990's and then shortly after that started Rock River on their own in the mid 1990's, They as owners and a company know what it takes to manufacture a quality AR15 product, I have worked on and handled hundreds of AR's and have never had or witnessed any failures of a Rock River AR that wasn't due to poor maintenance or worn parts. Remember anything mechanical is subject to failure, Also I believe about ten years ago Rock River was awarded either a DEA or FBI contract due to their weapons out performed a dozen other manufactures competing for the contract, you could ask the company to confirm that. So my thoughts are, buy, enjoy and be well , Kevin

You can always buy a complete upper half that's chromed lined.

Go to You-Tube and watch a video on Rock River AR's by "Nutnfancy".  It's 47 minutes long and I think you'll enjoy it.
