I've had a very competent gunsmith install a free float handguard and better trigger on an armalite A4 20" SPR recently. I got to shoot it yesterday, and my accuracy has fallen off from about 1.5-2 MOA to about 4 MOA or worse. The barrel's only had about 500 rounds down it. I was shooting from on a bench on a slightly windy day but I only shot when the wind calmed down, I used American Eagle 55 gr FMJ before and after the handguard changeover. I didn't leave my bolt with the 'smith and he had to remove the barrel to install the handguard (headspace problem?). I'm going to try it again this weekend both with more A.E. and some match ammo. Right now, I'm very frustrated as I thought I was investing in much better accuracy, not worse. Any suggestions on what I might look for will be highly appreciated.

Is this gunsmith known for his good AR work? Doubt it's headspace. Barrel nut torqued to spec?

You cant alter the headspace on an AR.  Its not headspace.  What kind of float tube was it?  I bet the float tube or its installation is where the problem lies.

Yes, the 'smith is very knowledgeable on ARs. The handguard is a Badger Ordnance Stabilizer Handguard (I liked the idea of a flat bottom forend---now I'm not so sure).

Here are my thoughts:

1) Something is touching between the tube and the barrel causing harmonics/vibrations.

2) The smith did a bad job.

3) This happens to me on windy days: I rush the shot to get it in between gusts.

4) Possible copper buildup?

Anyway, BTT for ya.
