I've been reading threads constantly trying to find the answers to my questions with no resolution. I'm new to  to the ar's. I recently purchased a bushmaster xm15a2. It has a 20" barrel no flash suppressor and a a2 trapdoor fixed stock. I was wondering how or if I can switch to a carbine stock. I like the setup how it is but during my time in the army I got used to having the collapsible stock all the way in for comfort. I've read that I can just get a new buffer tube, spring and buffer that are carbine length and the buffer tube being capable of using a telescopic stock. Also if I'm able to for the bushmaster would I need  a mil spec or commercial type stock and buffer tube? All responses are appreciated.

If you are on a budget watch Sportsmans Guide, they have M4 stocks complete with the spring and buffer for $26. Pretty simple to change. Remove the screw on the butt plate, stock body comes off, use cresent wrench to unscrew the buffer tube, remove the spring and buffer first and watch for the buffer detent and take down detent. Install new stock. Bada bing! 10 minute job.
Comercial vs. Mil-Spec. As long as you are just useing the stock body that came with the stock/tube kit it doesn't matter, IMO. The only reason it matters is if you want an aftermarket stock body later that is one or the other.

You can change it out by buying a complete stock kit. I recommend Mil-size, not commercial, as you will have more stock options, and it kind of is the standard everyone goes by.
These can be had from BCM (bravo company, site sponsor!) for as little as 60$. Then pick out the stock you want. It's a pretty straight forward and simple swap.

First off Your Bushmaster is a Model XM15E2S, secondly do you want to stick with a Bushmaster Carbine stock? If yes than they are commercial diameter tubes. Almost all people run rifle stocks on rifles but some do run carbine stocks on rifles, including the Canadian Military. To switch to a Carbine stock you need....a castlenut wrench, end plate, castlenut, carbine buffertube, carbine spring & buffer, and Carbine stock body. Make sure you get matching stock/buffertube. Example being if you buy a milspec buffertube make sure you buy a mlspec stock body. Now while your at it get a new threaded M4 carbine barrel or have your 20" barrel cut down to a dissapator and threaded for a flash hider by John Thomas over at www.retroarmsworks.com he does all my barrel work from now on, he's so good, I dumped the last company I used for 6 years. Hope I covered all your questions.

ETA: If you keep the rifle length barrel, I'd recommend using a H2 buffer because they are heavier than standard carbine buffers, rifle buffers are much heavier than carbine buffers and if your rifle is running like a top as is than try the Heavier buffer when you swap stocks.

I was looking at magpul for a stock. I just don't know if  either the mil spec or commercial buffer tube would screw onto my bushmaster. And awesome I checked out the link and I will for sure be contacting them to cut my barrel or get it threaded. Do you know of any kits that I could just buy to convert to a carbine stock? Preferably affordable. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it!

Would a mil spec buffer tube screw onto my weapon? I would much rather get mil spec I just didn't know if the threads for the tubes would fit. Thank you!

Yes, mil spec or commercial will work. They both have the same threads. The only real difference is the diameter of the buffer tube.

DSG Arms (they have a dealer account here) has Mil-spec kits with Magpul stocks for about the best price I can find.  I recommend the ACS, STR or ACS-L.  They all have a similar cheek weld that is a vast improvement over the standard A2 rifle stock you are currently using.  The stock kits run 119.00 for all the parts you need.  The only tool you might want to get is a stock wrench for tightening the castle nut on the new stock.  The site has them for 5.25.
