I am finally ready to take the 5.56 to 308 plunge....Is there a reason to have a 7.62x51 chamber over a 308 , which is better and why? And, In the interest of recycling parts, Can a .750 flip up yhm 5.56 gas block /front sight be used on 308's if the barrel is machined to .750 from the gas block forward? Thanks in advance

7.62x51 chamber is looser... good if you want to shoot surplus but might hurt accuracy slightly. I *think* the gas block would work, but I'm not positive... I'll defer that to the experts

7.62 has a wider range of acceptable head-space.   However often the chambers are often the same.   Don't think just cause your barrel says 7.62 that the crap surplus will run good.   There are much more important things then whats stamped on the barrel.

A .750 gas block is a .750" gas block.   If you have to pin it then your barrel may need to be drilled to pin it.   If you need set screw dimples, then thats what your barrel needs.
