I was switching out stocks on my new CMMG Bargain Bin AR-15 when I badly damaged the spring under the stock................. It is the spring that holds the take down pin. I have waited for 2 weeks for the parts and now this...UGH !!! Can you tell me what this spring is called and if anyone in Roanoke Va. sells them ??? I really wanted to shoot this AR-15 this weekend. Thanks.........

Rear takedown pin spring. What does it look like now that you "ruined" it?

i bet $1  he pinched it... now it's at like a 90degree elbow...

If i had a spare one on hand, i'd send it out to ya bud.  I'm sure someone nice around here will do something similar =)

Straighten it and put it back in- should be fine.

This!

Its sole purpose is to place tension on the detent which keeps the takedown pin from sliding out of its hole in the receiver.

It is not possible to straighten this one out......................I pretty much destroyed it. I was hoping some store in Roanoke Va. sold them. I called the gunsmith at Gander Mountain and he said he didn't carry them. Is this spring something that could be found at Gander Mountain. I know not to believe everything I hear.

Oh....Is there a small parts kit I should buy so in the future I won't be cussing myself. I have had this rifle for 2 weeks and really wanted to shoot it this weekend. Cabin fever and snow has me kinda bored and antsy.......

get it in the hole by any means necessary other than cutting it. you'll be fine.

you are NOT gonna find this at Gander Mountain!

Solve that problem permanently by tapping the hole to 4-40 and put a set screw in it to hold the spring in.  Make sure you cut 1/8" off the spring.

Hey....I appreciate offers for replacement springs !!! I was just hoping to find one local so I could shoot the rifle this weekend. Can I fire the rifle with this spring missing ???

We're laughing now cuz none of us LIARS have ever done this.
If you can make this somewhat straight, use it.  Order several more... Some forget and twist the stock on removal.  But not me.  After the 3rd or 5th time

The spring that holds the flint in a standard-size Bic cigarette lighter is an easy stand-in for the spring you molested.
Trim a bit off it... it'll be stiff.
I used this trick to salvage my own clusterfuck years ago.  Worked so nice I never bothered replacing it.

EDIT:  Get a BIC lighter, stomp it with your heel to break it.  Remove the "head."  Under the rolling wheel that your thumb would "flick," there is a flint.  A spring holds that flint under constant pressure, just like your rear detent.  Trim some off and swap as needed.  Bam... $.79 never saved you so much time.

I have done that, just bend it straight and put it back in the hole.
It's just for the rear take down pin.

I'd think most gun shops worth a damn would have the rear take down spring. Its pretty standard in an AR repair kit.

That’s a damn fine idea MacGyver!

You don’t really need to stomp on it though…
Just use a screwdriver to pry the rolling wheel off…

I like to destroy them before I disassemble them.  I figure I'll purposefully let the fuel out on my terms (outside, my foot, etc.) rather than screw around it inside.

Whatever works... the spring is the important bit.
