Newbie to posting here so please be gentle.

I have S&W M&P4 AR that has about 5000 rounds through the chamber and barrel.  Recently my vertical string has gone wild at 100 yards.  Shoots anywhere from eight inches high to eight inches low.  Horizontal is fine.  Fifty yard groups are golf ball size.  I have tried different ammo, both handloaded and store purchase, all do the same thing.

Anyone have any ideas or is it time for a new barrel.

Thanks

Probably you, not the rifle. Are you using a scope by any chance? Change anything recently?

Iron sights or scope? Sounds like something is loose and moving around.

That is what I am saying-rifle worked fine-grapefruit size at 100-300 yards.  Now I can't find a bullet hole on paper at 200 yards.  I shoot from bi-pod, hard rest, off hand with a scope and one piece Burris mount.  At the last three gun shoot, i could not hitting the targets at the 125 and 250 yard markers.  They are 10 inch plates on swingers.

Take a hard look at the scope, you can move up to 50 yards and check zero then crank the scope up or down several clicks like 1/2 turn and if the point of impact does not move its the scope. Also since it is that far off put it in a rest and while looking thru the scope watch the cross hairs move while adjusting first up five or so then down 10 then put back to where you started and see if it has returned to zero.

Could it be a bad lot of ammo? Inconsistent loads causing massive differences in drop rates?

we would need more detailed info

are you using diff ammo weight? or all the same

what is your barrel twist & bullet weight that you have been using?

have someone else shoot it, see if they get same results

then report back

after that look @ scope & scope mount

OP, feel for you man.  The only thing to do, as others have mentioned, is to start cutting down the options.  Sounds like, bad scope, dirty barrel, something loose.  Just a guess though.  Good luck, please let us know what you find!  L2B
