Hey all, so I got this upper in response to a add I've had for damaged parts.
I don't think it anything special but I'm wondering what might have caused some
Of the marking and damage.
The barrel is completly full of epoxy , the handguard cap
Has some kind of strange rivet in it. And the gas tube has been cut off
And one end fastened into the charging handle.

What ya think?

MP C barrel? What the heck is that little nut on the barrel cap, and lastly is that paint all over it or something tougher? Just wondering if it can be cleaned up for your wall hanger project.

ETA- I'm just as curious as you, don't really have any answers, but if you don't mind me asking...how much did you pay for this? I think it can be cleaned up to fit your need.

Looks to be a movie prop or drill rifle.

With the bands of bright metal on it, I think it may have been used with MILES gear, maybe before they came up with the training BCG that allowed any troop to use their personal weapon. I'm going to say early MILES gear. Maybe someone who knows for sure will show up, but the piece fitting through the front HG retainer looks like maybe the wiring for the laser went through there at one time. There were also a number of other, similar but less well known training aids using lasers - maybe one of those? I think it's historical myself, not a movie gun. Just my .02 and worth exactly what you paid for it.

I wonder if you could clear out the bore with enough solvent... It's probably shot out but I'd still try it just to see... if it were mine that is.

Well it looks like paint, it's flaking off all over , shouldn't be too hard to strip.
I'll probably hit it with the aircraft paint remover I used
On one before...... It takes off anything!

I really don't know the back story in this. The seller answered the add
For a barrel only, which we made a deal at 20$.
I don't know if he couldn't seperate it from the upper,
But he offered to sell me the whole thing for 80$.
I wasn't sure exactly what I was getting ,, I didn't see any
Pictures beforehand, but I think the upper is useable

I could try it, . But without letting the cat out of the bag
It's going to be a display gun,, it'll never fire.
So it wouldn't be a problem to leave it.

It's really not as easy as I thought it
Would be to find damaged, unusable parts.

Your FSB, weld spring, snap ring, FA, rear sight small parts, and wheel when cleaned, port door assembly (properly stripped), FH, charging handle, etc. These are just the items I noticed at a glance that can be reused when properly stripped of the black paint. I'd buy that complete upper for $80.00 just to see what I could salvage, that was a good score. I know it's not what you want to do, but take comfort in knowing that you could clean up and sell the small parts I listed for prolly more than you paid.

That would make since. The charging handle was sealed in
By some piece of plastic. I had to pull pretty hard to get it out,
And when it did peices of plastic broke off and went everywhere .
And what's left of the gas tube is held in the charging
Handle by more of the same plastic.

I tried to google pics of early miles gear but I can't find any good pics.
Maybe somebody has some?

I just realized I didn't use the possessive form of their! WTH? Sorry, I fixed it. I'll look into MILES gear more when I have some time. I bet Coldblue could tell us something about it.

Where the afore postulated wires were wrapped around the barrel?

Seems legit.

I haven't used miles gear in about 3 years when we finally got ahold of the newer saab stuff, but neither our nor the DOE weapons had modifications like that from what I remember. I never got to use Miles in the military.

Edit, it also requires a functioning blank firing weapon, with an epoxy filled barrel and cut gas tube that wouldn't work.

This is why I'm thinking it was some other training aid at this point. What was the one that was like a video game and you shot inside at a screen, and it registered hits?

found this which includes this:(along with other cool stuff, like placing a dime on the barrel to cure jerking trigger syndrome)

MULTIPURPOSE ARCADE COMBAT SIMULATOR (MACS)
The U.S. Army developed the MACS as an inexpensive marksmanship trainer (Figure A-10).

a.   The system consists of a Commodore 64 microcomputer, 13-inch color monitor, specially designed long-distance light pen, and mount that attaches to the M16A2 rifle. (Some versions use a permanent mount on a demilitarized rifle.) The system is activated by a program cartridge, which contains several training exercises.

b.   The MACS was designed to enhance other training techniques and existing training aids and devices used to train and sustain marksmanship skills. It is not designed to replace live-fire training or to eliminate the need for knowledgeable instructors. The MACS provides additional practice for those units without access to adequate range facilities, or that have other resource constraints.

may be a winner?

also, following the MACS was the Weaponeer system, too bad no more details are included.

Hotdog is on it. I would say it's from the Weaponeer system. I had to cut about 100 of them up.

ETS 2000, but I doubt they ever mutilated M16A1's.  Looks like someone else has found its predecessors.

And the answer is??????????????????

It was someone's going away plaque from the mil. That's standard de mil procedures then painted with semi gloss and mounted on a plaque. That's where the ring comes from and the cut off tube. Etc

Actually that's just a guess but I've seen plenty like that over the years. With the same and different configurations.

Ok guys , I was able to get some imfo from the owner .

I think hotdog might have got this one . It was a for a army training rifle that was
Made non operational by filling in the barrel , cutting off the gas tube,
And securing the charging handle. The lower was a xm16e1 that was demilled by drilling holes through it.
The trigger was attached to a laser that hung under the barrel that would show
Point of impact on some type of screen.

now you need a Commodore 64 microcomputer, and a 13 inch screen, know any computer people?

I'm A+ and C+ Certified in Computer Repair and Diagnostics, etc... Degree in Computer Science. Find me a few scrap units and I'll put together a working one for you. He's going to strip that upper of all the black paint and make a wall hanger, essentially a non functional conversation piece that looks 100% the part but doesn't fire. IMO this is perfect.

This is really cool. Cooler yet if the OP could hook it to Call of Duty or something...

My neighbors would think I've finally lost it if I put a 30 or
So year old gun simulator in my garage.... Would be kinda cool though.

I was able to get the upper of earlier,,, I will use it for another project
( the projects never seen to end ).  The display gun will be
Along the lines of a. 604.

Down side , I inspected the barrel a little closer ,
It's not filled with epoxy,,, it's welded up !
My guess is they inserted a metal rod and then welded
The ends up.

604's are tougher to find these days as where CH A1 uppers are everywhere, I'd use everything you were given. Strip away and see what's usable and what will have to be repainted.

I hear ya, but don't worry , no original colt parts
Will be damaged in making the rifle .... That aren't already
Ruined, I know the rules.

A while back I got a damaged slick side colt 223 upper of EE for 15$.
Turns out it was a 9 mm upper!
It it cracked all the way through around the front take down pin. From side to side.
It can be welded,.. But never trusted to fire.

That's not a 9x19 upper.  That's a .22"LR upper that you can hand down to your great-grandchildren.

Can you salvage the bbl extension from that bbl?  Or would it melt getting it off?
