headstamp says FC  223 Rem.  Case is nickel finished, the projectile is dark grayish, with a rather truncated tip.  Frangible?

Probably moly coated.
I would guess either:

federal cart: #  LE223T1, or LE223T3

Looks like federal LE tactical bonded to me

Flaguy: ok, you were right.  I ran some steel wool over the bullet, and hey. . .

What's with the tip?

Ok, now that we've got that mystery solved, I also have some rounds marked:

"FG  NT  223 Rem"

THAT'S frangible, yes?

I also have some rounds that look just like the Federal "bonded" LE stuff, BUT, the headstamp is "LC" and there is a symbol of a cross with a circle drawn around it.

What be dat?

The round in your first pic is a Federal Premium Trophy Bonded Bear Claw 55 gr. 223 REM ammo, P223T2. I tested it's performance in 2000. Federal superceeded it with the 60gr. Nosler Partition offering a while back. It is most certainly not frangible & was designed for deep penetration of this small but very well contructed bullet.
