Sorry if this has been covered before and I'm a newb.  I checked the first few pages and tried searching a few different phrases, but had no luck.  So, I'm looking for a light to mount on my AR.  What say the hive on tail cap switch vs. tape switch.  I don't really want a VFG and as far as I can tell, that would be the only way to operate without a tape switch.  I am probably wrong though.  So, what do you all prefer, tape or tail cap? Anybody use the tail cap switch without a VFG?  If so, how do you grip the rifle? Thanks guys.

The light I have is on a carbine. I use a MI Tactical light mount that mounts to the front sight housing and a TLR-1 light.
The paddle for a switch is easy to activate

I have a Surefire Scout 620C with an SR07 switch assembly.

I run the VTAC mount and Surefire G2 with the TNVC Q5 drop in combo with the standard tail cap switch.

Another BIG fan of the TLR-1 here.

Prefer a click cap or button cap over the tapeswitch, I like the Surefire XM07 tailcap which can be used with the M95 and M96 series as well as with the G2/6P series.  The SR07 tapeswitch with the button also seems to be popular, as does mounting pistol lights (X300, TLR-1, M3X) for their low profile, and these days produce sufficient output.

I have a TLR-1 and a G2 LED. The TLR is slightly brighter and whiter, and is a better spot. The G2 is a better flood. Both work well, are small, and light. The biggest disadvantage of the TLR is that it is very VERY easy to blip it on unintentionally.

If you're right handed you'd mount the light at about 10 'o' clock on the rail and operate it with your left thumb if you didn't want a pressure switch.  It is quite possible that this is uncomfortable if your rail is not long-ish, in which case you would probably be better served by a pressure switch.
