Not sure if this is the right subforum. . . this seems more general than a specific upper question.
So I’m in the process of building my first rifle ever, and am a bit boggled by the billions of choices of uppers. Now I know that upper selection depends on what you want to do with it. Problem is that due to being in college, I’m not going to be able to buy another upper in a year or two, so this needs to cover most of everything I do now, or could want to do which currently involves punching paper at the range, although I prefer reactive targets (boards are great fun with shotgun slugs). But I’d like it to be capable should I get into three gun or varmit hunting or watching red dawn while clutching said weapon. So here are the things i'm considering, and some questions I have:
Rock River Arms Elite CAR A4 upper: I like this cause of the chrome lined barrel, and cause legal_transfers includes a tac sight for a decent price. Couple of Questions: First, does it have a mid length gas system, or just mid length handgaurds? What is the barrel profile on this rifle? In the hands of good shooter and good glass, is it capable of oranges at 200 yards?
Rock River Arms NM A2: I know that if I do my part, this upper will do its. Preferable to the varmit because it includes sights, but a 20 inch match barrel might be a bit hefty. Does anyone know the barrel profile of this upper? How much does it weigh compared to the Varmit 20 inch upper? Is it too heavy for real world use (varmints in the field and three gun?)
Rock River Arms Varmit A4: If I do my part, yadda yadda. The plus is that I can choose a shorter barrel length, and the flattop upper. The minus is no irons, so I’ll probably shoot it with a cheap optic. (These would probably be purchased from Legal Transfers) What are the gas system lengths on the 16 inch and 18 inch rifles? From what I’ve read, there shouldn’t be an appreciable accuracy difference (at least none visible in “real life” shooting conditions, but I could be wrong. Can any of you comment on the relative accuracy of models.
I don’t want you to tell me which of these I should buy, that’s a decision I will have to make, but any comments about the models will be helpful. And since I tend to be swayed by opinion, the more differing ones I hear, the more likely I am to do what I want.
Anyway, thanks in advance for helpin this newbie enter the world of the Evillllll Rifle.
