I'd like to put some rails on my AR so I can put a light on it and also try out some other gadgets. I've got a RRA Entry Tactical so I'm guessing it will need to be carbine length. Is that correct? What do you guys recommend? Is there anything I can install myself? Or do I need to take it to a gunsmith? Are there special tools needed to install it? Free float? Two piece? One piece? Which is better and why? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Pics are also good. -Nick |

Check this thread out. Lots of pics. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782 Scroll down to the handguard install section. It covers the complete installs and also shows some of the different types of rails. |

I would honestly say just get a used KAC RAS off the EE. You'll wind up with a MUCH higher quality rail system than you could get with anything else in that price range, and while it's not free floating, so what? It's a carbine, not a 24" fluted SS match rifle. Also because it's two-piece, it'll be easy as pie to install. Short of that, I'd say skip the YHM & MI rails & go straight for a Troy/Samson. I know, I know, the YHM & MI are perfectly good rails that I'm sure will be fine, it's just that they're circular instead of oval and that bugs the hell outta me. Makes it too fat in my opinion. 3rd option is go big. Either LaRue/DD or REAL BIG with Vltor VIS2/LMT MRP. It's all about how much you want to spend. Just remember not to put too much stock into the whole "gotta free float it" mentality for a carbine. You can, but it's not as high a priority as some make it out to be. |
| I got a used Surefire M73 carbine rails for $115 and a 4 pannel set of KAC panels for $28 and a TD grip for $45..the whole set up for what it would have cost me for a new surefire. The M73 locks in tight + im not gonna mountoptics so the YHM 2 piece handgurds would have done as well..M73 right time and price.YHM 2 piece ones go $150 new and ive seen them as cheap as $110 new.Check the E Exchange. |

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=172238 yea, CAR length, round cap for the price, MI, YHM, Surefire; if not, Troy, KAC, Samson, DD. Larue are good FF imo is pretty useless for non-target orientated uppers and more complicated to install; fo r your AR, i'd opt for a simple repacable HG set |

There is a lot of talk about Daniel Defence: New Products Forum Discussion |
I got a KAC as well from the EE. Cool thing as well, I was having a mounting problem...KAC knew I bought it used from an individual, and they were more than happy to help me. |
Now I just built a rifle with YHM handguards. Yes they are round. But I do not find them uncomfortable. Maybe you will, maybe you won't. The handguard measures ~2.25" diameter. ~2.50" with rail covers. Ladder covers do not add much to the diameter. I added ladder covers to the sides and panels to the top and bottom. This does help give an oval feel. But again, I don't find the size or shape all that uncomfortable. |
