I have an opportunity to get a nice VP stamped barrel assembly complete with duckbill FH and 601 handguards (painted black). It comes with a gas tube as well, but I cannot tell if it is an early one or not. A local guy has them and wants to sell them locally to someone that can use them. My dilemma is that I have no idea as to what these are worth. I want to let him know something really soon. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Barrel $500
Duckbill $150
Handguard $1000
Tube is real $150

I think the last 601 barrel I saw sell was for $1200. Handguards, about $500-1000 depending on condition and mainly what someone is willing to pay. They seem to be pretty pricey lately.

Yes a 601 barrel 1/14 W marked barrel is $1200. A VP is not. It is about $500. I just sold 2

Thanks for clarifying.

There ARE VP marked 601 barrels as well.  They are ONLY marked VP (no M near the VP), they DO NOT have a 12 near the end of the barrel, AND they are 1/14 twist.

If I read correctly, the VP marked 1/14 barrels were used on late 601s. Is this true? Here are some pics of what I am looking at.

NICE!  Is it possible to see some better photos of the barrel markings?  Is there a 12 about three inches from the muzzle? Test the gas tube with a nagnet - the 601 gas tubes are VERY MAGNETIC. If you decide to strip the black paint off of the handguards, don't post it on here, as a few members will rip you a new one (ask me how I know, lol). However,  I'm still glad that I did on mine, as the green paint stayed, and my handguards are in 98% condition, and I have never seen another set of green 601 handgurds this nice for sale.  The black paint over the green means that it was police issue (or, some say early 602).  If you DO decide to remove the black paint, IM me, and I'll tell you how to do so while retaining the original 601 green paint.

There is no 12 on the barrel. I asked him that a little bit ago. I am still working on the deal. I want to make sure that it is worth my while to get. Of course, I will end up selling it to someone who really needs it. I do not feel like building a 601. Besides, I am getting ready to shell out some funds for a NIB Colt 6230.

An excellent find, jrs!
Looks like a mid-to-later 601 barrel, Colt manufactured before the change to 1-12.  If you can get the barrel assembly (without the furniture) for $1200, it'd be a damn good deal.

Just as a reference, the small VP proof below is on the Winchester-manufactured barrel on 000748.  (It appears Colt proof-tested at least some of the barrels they sub-contracted.)  I point this out to show that a VP proof mark does not necessarily indicate a "later" 601 barrel.

Mine stayed too.  I didn't get shit about it bc I was just cleaning off a lot of black handguards I got in a bulk deal, and wouldn't you know, that brillo pad took off some black paint and left the green looking great.

This kind of surprises me because the factory black paint that Colt used on LE rifles was, from what I can tell, just as durable as the green.
Of course, if someone simply spray-painted over green furniture to make it look more modern (we know it was done on occasion back when no one wanted "old" furniture), this would sound realistic.

The black paint on my handguards WAS very durable and took HOURS to remove one thin layer at a time (in order to preserve the green paint underneath).

Well guys, things have progressed. We are meeting on Feb. 4th at a local gun show so that I can get a really good look at the stuff. I will let you guys know what happens. For those that are interested in the barrel in question, stay tuned.

Huh. I bought this vp 1/14 no W, but S marked from you for $1200 with no duckbill, and sold it for the same to Kkid.  I also bought a NOS VP 12 marked Cast FSB for $900+ about a year ago off the EE. I thought both were good buys and worth the coin. Attached File
