I am planning to buy a used AR15.  I have been looking at two Bushmaster XM-15-E2S.  From what I understand, one was made during the ban and the other (#2) is post-ban.

Here is the info I have.....

1.)  Carry Handle SN# L167XXX pretty much bone stock (Asking price = under $1000)

2.)  Flat Top SN# BFI442XXX picanny top rail and four sided picanny forestock with match trigger (Asking price = $1000)

Which of these would be the best rilfe.......and buy.........overall.

I know the picanny rail systems will allow more options for add-ons, but I personally do not like too much clutter.

Also, is there another manufacturer that makes a more reliable AR15 that I should consider buying?

Thanks in advance.

it obviously depends on what you plan on using it for.

I have a bushmaster with the flat top, and I love it

personally, I would go for the second one, simply because of the flat top, so I could add some nice optics later on, and still have the option to use iron sights.  the picatiny hand guard is nice for at the very least a bipod.

as for pre/post ban I think the main differences are the flash hider, and bayo lug... I'm not real sure about this though...

you'll want to check bore condition, but you probably already knew that.

Thanks jrucker2004.

Both rifles bores are in great condition.

It will primarily be a range and plinking rifle with occasional uses in carbine and 3 gun matches.  Mainly, it will take the place of the SP1 M4 I have been using.

Since price is same on both, buy this one.

If you´re gonna hang around ARFcom, you end up buying it anyway...

Colt, of course. Every other brand is shit and you should know that.

Before spending $1,000 on a used rifle... Go to the Industry forum for Bushmaster or
www.bushmaster.com your used prices look like M.S.R.P.(retail)
For $1,000 on EE you could buy more, alot more.
For $1,000 in the build it forum you can get two rifles(with used EE parts)
Take your time, it's your money. Buy what you want. Save the crying for the ammo prices

I am not in a rush to buy anything right now, as I already have an SP1.  I have even thought of buying another it one came along at the right price.

I did some more auction searching and saw some new Bushmasters and some new Colt LE's that are well within my price range.

Are the LE's reliable and accurate?  My impression is that they would be.

I had thought about a DPMS LR-308.  However, for a .308, and shooting longer distances, there are better platforms than the AR....in my opinion.

Thanks again everyone.

First off, please allow me to appologize for double posting.  Although I wasn't aware that I did.

Yes... by all means look around......  FYI.. you can get a brand-new 20" flattop Bushmaster for about $900.  Pre-ban (as well as now - post 2004) means you get all the "evil" features.  A "pre-ban" rifle (one bult before 1994) should not be any more expensive than the identical rifle built today.... People will still try to sell pre-1994 rifles for more... and there are idiots that buy them.  If you see a rifle with no muzzle attachment or a brake pinned on and no bayo lug, its a "during the ban (1994-2004)" build.  Don't waste your money.... although if its cheap enough you may be able to replace the barrel and end up ahead.  It would have to be REAL cheap to make this feasible....like under $500.

Ignore the moron that said Colt was best and all else is shit.  There are a lot of Colt biggots on this site.  Colt, Bushmaster, LMT, RRA, and a couple of others are basically EQUAL in quality.  Meaning "GOOD".  I have them all except LMT and the ONLY DIFFERENCE IS PRICE.... Colt commands a premium of about 30% because there are people that will pay it and swear all day long they're better.   I will not say what I think of those people because I might get banned.

I'd check around before paying $1k for a Bushmaster.  Bushmaster is the best out there and you pay for it.  I saw a table full of brand new Bushy's at a gun show last weekend.  All were $800-$900.  In any configuration you want.

I have 6 AR's, all different makes (including 2 that I assembled from parts) and all fire flawlessly.

ps:  I wont' buy a COLT,  I heard that they're not even American-Owned now, and the owner wants to stop selling to civilians.  I read it in a newsgroup but they could be wrong.

Taurus bought them.

To me Colt, like Winchester, is an American legend.  I am proud to own firearms from both of these manufactures.  However, the ones I own were all made between 1916 and 1977.

Ruger, S&W (pre-lock), Kimber (all Series I), Remmington and Marlin make the rest of my tools.  Tools that I know I can count on at any time.

I am not opposed to buying either Colt or Bushmaster, but pre-ban or post ban is what I will buy.  I don't see anything evil about them, I just feel they have better components.  Evil is in the eye of the criminal and/or the criminal minded.

I know that "Evil" is used quite sarcasticallyon this forum, and I am ok with that.    It's some of the politicians, and others with closed minds, that refuse to see the beauty and usefullness in all firearms that upsets me.

I agree about Colt being an American icon.  But I wouldn't want a Harley that was built under AMF ownership.  Anyway, I owned a Colt AR.  It functioned great, but the pins were different from everyone elses, so I traded it for a Bushmaster.  Colt designs their AR's with a few proprietary dimensions so that only Colt-specific stuff will fit on a Colt AR.  I personally don't like that.  But, I don't slam anyone for owning what ever brand they want.

This is exactly how I feel.  My one Colt AR is an SP1 which I chersh... BUT -- I will not do business with Colt nowadays because of their attitude.  Any company that refuses to sell otherwise legal products to civilians for political reasons can KISS MY WHITE ASS!

That being said... other than the hole dimensions which does not affect quality in any way, just parts interchangeability, Colt DOES make a very fine product to this day.  They just can't have my money.

And yes "evil" was meant in the sarcatic way -- meaning "features that were banned during the ban"......  The only thing truly "evil" here are those who would abridge our rights -- specially when done solely for political gain and to make noise in the media...
