1) what's the deal w/ "enhanced bolt carriers/groups - any real reaon to fork over the extra dough?

2) what's with gas blocks? are they necessary once the front sight is removed? or something else?

#2, The AR-15 rifle uses gas to cycle the action.  The front sight base doubles as a gas manifold with a gas tube leading back to the carrier key.  If the front sight tower is removed, then something has to be the manifold to make the connection between the barrel gas port and the gas tube.

#1, The standard bolt and carrier work fine in the rifles.  Companies offer carriers that are heaver, while others offer types that shroud the firing pin like the M-16 system.  Bottom line is these special items fill niches in the market for people looking for something different.

Most bolt carriers are "enhanced", at least my Oly, RRA, and Bushie ones are.
