I recently purchased a new M4 type Stag model 2HT. It’s a flat top with a 16” barrel, standard F marked FSB, and Samson free float rail. The rifle looks absolutely fantastic in the fit and finish department and has yet to be fired. I need help on zeroing the sights and I was hoping someone here could fill in some blanks on the rear BUIS as I am new to this type of sight. It has an A.R.M.S. #40L .75 MOA with two apertures, each having a notch out of the top.
What is this notch? How is it used?
I have been to the Samson website, but could only find their brief description of the sight and a sample picture that doesn’t look like it has the notches so that left me a little confused.

From their website:
“When the sight is released into battery the 250-300 meter aperture is ready for immediate close combat use. For longer ranges the leaf sight aperture is rotated to access the 500-600 capability with the built in horizon line feature that helps lead distant targets and lets the shooter square the rifle to counter windage offsets, if the rifle is inadvertently tilted.”

Well, I don’t get it. When the sight is flipped up, both apertures are in the up position which means you’re effectively looking through the smaller peep until you rotate the small hole peep down. Isn’t this the 500-600m for longer distance shooting? Hardly seems ready for what they call “immediate close combat use.”

And what/where is the horizon line feature? Could that be what the notches are?
I also see some graduated vertical lines on the rear base of the sight, but these look like some sort of windage reference for when the sight is in the lowered position. Not sure about these either. Is there some sort of official manual on this sight that tells about the features and has recommended distances to zero at for things to work as intended?

I know this is a quality sight that is going to work just fine for me once I know what the heck I’m doing with it. The rifle didn’t come with any instructions on this sight so I’m looking for users who are familiar with it to help put me on the fast track.
Thanks.

Im not if its been changed but the one Ive had for 2 years flips up with the small apperture in place and has to be flipped out of the way (which bugs me.)  The lines you speak of I have no idea other than the lazer etched windage lines on the base of the sight.

ETA since it is a "back up" sight Im thinking about taking off the small apperture.

The notch on top is for very long shots (600 yds). In those situations, you'd use the notch and front sight, rather than the aperture and front sight. I own a ARMS #40L-SP. I can't ever see using/needing the notches, but they don't really detract from anything either.
