I am currently in the late stages of building my AR.  It is a 100% functional rifle and I am at the point where I would like to just increase its performance.  All of the internals are still Bushmaster and they have worked fine for me so far.  I do most of my shooting at the farm in some pretty dirty conditions and it has functioned no differently than my friend's Colt.  The Colt does have a smoother trigger and from what I understand, more robust internals.  On my list of things to get in no particular order are:

Fail Zero Bolt Assembly (or other bolt assembly if y'all know of better)
Different Trigger Grouping (I have seen Geissele but if there are better ones let me know)
Aimpoint Pro (I currently run an ACOG which is great but its not good for confined spaces and it is a little beat up after serving on 4 combat deployments.  Before that I had been running an EOTech setup)

If y'all could list these in order of importance or maybe add some other suggestions it would definitely be appreciated.  Thanks

the biggest difference that you are goin to notice is obviously the trigger. so thats my #1. have you considered the FSC 556 FH? I have one and it makes the gun come straight back no muzzle flip. run in conjunction with the enidine hydro buffer its the shit. as far as the bolt you probably wont notice a huge dif. the ACOG is IMO the best all around optic. I used it in Afghanistan, when I say used it I mean I have actually used it. I wasnt a POG. I was a scout. Then i used the m14  (the shit.) next would be the aimpoint for sure. but thats my 2cents hope it helps.  From one vet to another thank you.

I don't feel the Fail Zero BCG is worth the money.  Save a hundred and get a well proven bolt group with proper stakings and HPI/MPI certs like a BCM, LMT, or Daniel Defense (all around $130).  Geissele triggers are great values if you're looking for a two-stage type trigger; ADCO now sells their S2S which is only $125.

Aimpoint Pro is probably the best bang for the buck RD right now, I'd say go for it if that's what you're looking for, but I typically find optics a personal preference so long as its within the major brands.  You could also consider running a Trijicon TR24 1-4x as well if you like the magnification and clarity of your ACOG but would like a 1x option, but you won't get the unlimited eye relief of an Aimpoint.

Twenty years of shooting BM rifles the only problems I have had is with extractor/spring/inserts, they wear out.  The BCG it's self have always been gtg.  I have had to stake a few gas key bolts.  For precision shooting a trigger upgrade is a good idea, for general plinking just cleanup the oem trigger group, add a wolf spring kit, they clean up to acceptable levels.

What buffer are you using?  I like using a H buffer as it smooths the carbine nicely.  If you really need to upgrade something buy a BAD ASS.

There is nothing wrong with the reliability of Bushmaster parts.  I haven't had any problems in over 15 years with my A2 heavy barrel carbine and A2 heavy barrel rifle.

That being said, I've been upgrading both of my Bushmasters this year, and you could inspect your weapon to see if the same conditions apply.

BCG (bolt carrier group) Bushmaster supplies semiauto bolt carriers in their weapons in most cases (as far as I know, to the point that they state (erroneously in their catalogs at least up through 2009-201) that full auto bolt carriers are NFA parts).  I upgraded to PSA (palmetto state armory) full auto bolt carriers because they have fully shrouded firing pins (so the hammer is not being reset by the firing pin), because of the additional weight, and because PSA Premium BCGs ($110 or $99 on sale) feature bolts that are MPI and HP tested.  As a bonus the PSA BCG finish is smoother that the Bushmaster parts finish and seem to hold lubricants better.

My Bushmasters came with notched hammers.  I switched to PSA LPKs ($50 or $60 with Magpul MOE pistolgrip and trigger guard) as they came with round hammers, lighter springs (reduced trigger effort compared to the Bushmaster springs), and much smoother trigger feel.

For triggers how about considering a 60 dollar battle trigger from spikes, im getting ready to order one myself. So far as i can tell they get good reviews and is a big improvement over stock triggers without killing your wallet for a 2 stage. Im thinking if i dont like it then 60 dollars is much less of a loss then money spent on a 2 stage
