I have a Bushmaster Patrolman carbine which has the standard front site.  After some use I've decided I really want to get rid of the fixed sight and get a BUIS.

Problem is the front sight is pretty much attached to the barrel.

With my limited AR knowledge I'm not sure which is the best way to go, can/should I buy a whole new upper?  Really don't want to send the $500-$700 dollars if I don't have to.  Can I buy a new barrel?

Anything else I'm missing or don't understand?

PS - I don't post here much so my ID isn't known.  I understand there is some deal with 88 that is bad, before I knew that, I had picked 88 because I work for an airline on the MD88 aircraft.  So no racist statement ment by Evolution88.

Thanks for your help.

Hiya....

Your front sight is pinned on.  It can be removed by hammering out the pins, and slipping the gas block/front sight off the rifle.  You'll have to remove your muzzle device to do so (this is very easy as long as it isn't pinned on).

After removing the muzzle device, you need to remove the pin from where the gas tube goes into your gas block as well.  Basically if you have any pins in the side of your front sight, you need to take them out.

Once the pins are out, you can remove the front sight block without the gas tube coming out (it is no big deal if it does).

Once you get the front sight off, you can install a low-profile gas block or a gas block with a flip-up front sight.  If you don't have a railed forearm where you can attach a front sight, you would be much better off getting a gas block with a flip-up front sight.

Hope this helps!

John,

Thank you.

One additional question, how do I tell if the muzzle device is pinned?  I'm looking at it, I don't see a pin in it.  Here is what the Bushmaster web site says, I don't think the muzzle device is pinned.  Just dont' want to start cranking on the Muzzle unless I'm sure.

The Bushmaster A2 & A3 Type Patrolman’s Carbines are modeled after our M4 Type Carbines, but with additional barrel length to make them legal for sale to individual officers (semi-automatic configuration with 16" barrel).

The 5.56mm/.223 Rem. caliber 16" barrel is chrome lined in both bore and chamber for long wear life and ease of maintenance. For control of muzzle flash and muzzle rise in rapid fire, a “birdcage” type suppressor is factory installed. A mil. spec. manganese phosphate outer coating insures protection against corrosion or rust on the barrel and all critical steel parts of the weapon.

Post a pic of your gun & close up of your muzzle device & we should be able to tell you if it's pinned. You can also look at the flats at the aft end of the muzzle device & tell whether or not there are weld marks.

Doesn't appear to be pinned. Also, if it's a 16" barrel WITHOUT the flash suppressor then there would be no requirement to pin it anyway. Just take a 3/4 wrench & screw it off.

OK, that worked.  Thanks for your help guys.

Now I can push the pins out of the front sight, remove it and no more co-witness for me.

I'll start reading for which BUIS will work best on just a barrel.

Lastly, I can put my 22LR silencer on it when using my conversion kit.

Again, thanks for the help guys.

I hope you have better luck getting the front site off than I did.... After spending 2 hours pounding and heating the pins on mine (yes I was beating them in the right direction) and having a local gun smith give it a shot, to no avail, I just took the grinder to it. Made it low pro and threw a 10" rail over it...

Make sure you tap the pins out from left to right (from the shooting point of view). The gas tube can go either way.

Its going to take a lot of effort to get those pins out, so make sure you get a good punch and something to brace your gun with.. it won't work just holding it.

ETA: whoops, look like you already tried that lol.
