I have a chance to purchase a NIB Bohica Arms 50BMG upper for a pretty good price.

Anybody have any experience with these? I know I would need a heavy hammer spring, but if I put that into one of my current lowers, would I still be able to use my other uppers with that lower or would I have to take the heavy spring back out?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

The 50 cal guys are over in the 50 Cal forum.

BOHICA has had a few versions, a Mk III is better that a Mk I and so on.   It has been refined over time, newer the better.

I have the MkIII.  It's the third and cheapest .50bmg I've owned  They are decent uppers for the money.  Go
to Bohica's website for the minor mods you need for your lower.  As the other poster said, the later models
are better than the earlier models.  The match grade are starting to show some promise in competitions.

I bought two of them when they first came out, #36 and #37 MKI 's for me and my dad. They are a blast to shoot and solidly built for our purposes. Bohica has been refining them as time goes on as the previous post has noted. I had to do some smoothing out and tweaking, but both uppers have functioned well. Right now they are relegated to spare time projects

Heavy hammer spring is a must. Best all around .50 upper for the price. Looks pretty nice too.

I ordered a MKI. When I finally got it, it was a MKIII. Very nice and well worth the wait. I understand the turn-around/wait time isn't so bad now. Cons... Chris is pretty much a one man show. Comms are slow to nothing. You get your order. Just don't expect daily phone/email updates. The guy really has his hands full. Not faulting him, just very busy and communication isn't at the top of the list.

Heavy hammer spring can be used with any caliber, it just may add to the trigger pull somewhat.  Make sure you have the hammer without a notch in the upper corner of the face.  It causes bolt cycling issues on the Bohica.

Older units (MkI) were critical of receiver extension thread alignment, as the tail of the bolt is pretty wide. This is an issue with the lower being out of spec, not the Bohica upper.

The non-notch hammers tend to be modified 3 rd burst hammers and have small catch surfaces down low on each side (for the 3 rd burst ratchet).  These should be ground down as they may catch on the slot in the bolt when the trigger is pulled. Mine did, and it slowed the hammer enough to prevent firing, and left a ding in that bolt slot that I had to file smooth.  It is easy dremel or file work, and no way to screw it up, since the surfaces being filed aren't used on the semi AR.

The bolt catch will need to be replaced with one he has modified ($20?), or just left out entirely.  I am sure that could also be ground to the proper shape, but without one in hand as a guide, I wouldn't try it.  And of course, remove the buffer and spring.  The buffer catch is held down and out of the way by a small tab on the Bohica upper, so it doesn't need to be removed.

He has a new bolt handle upgrade that you will want if it isn't on this upper.  It helps cam tight brass out of the chamber. The upgrade is free.  Call or send an email with the serial number and they will send it to you.  The new handle attachment bolt is an off the shelf length and MAY not have enough length to fully engage the threads in the bolt.  The next longer length from the hardware store is too long, but can be ground/filed to length easily enough.

I hope this helps.  His forum is down, so the tips and tricks are no longer easily available.

Oh yeah, don't forget some sort of recoil pad.  Though the brake is good, the cheese grater surface of an A2 stock is not your friend with this upper.  A cheap fix is a slip on Limbsaver, Medium.  Perhaps another can chime in on a size that fits the stock and has the right hole spacing.  I used a Limbsaver grind to fit on an ARFX, and one hole needed a little "ovaling" to fit.  I backed the pad with an aluminum plate for support, since I wanted the extra surface area, vs fitting to the ridiculously skinny ARFX stock face.  HTH
