I'm changing a old Colt sp with A1 sights from a full size (stock and 20" barrel) to a carbine.

Installed a Bushmaster HBar 16" and six position stock.

The rifle double feeds, Fails to eject and even had a few rounds get jammed between the bolt and the charging handle.  When I began to load dummy rounds I found occasionally the bolt carrier would be almost stuck in the forward position and would take some serious pulls to work it back.  My repair methods were...

a good cleaning,
check to see if the gas tube is upside down,
replaced gas rings with Colt rings,
checked cam pin and extractor/extractor spring.

edit:
can't go out and get a Bushy or RRA like I want, it's a work rifle

All good.

Any suggestions?

Did you rebarrel it, or is it a complete upper that you are using to replace the old one?

What spring and buffer are you using?

Yes it is a re-barrel.  Took off the colt 20" and installed a Bushmaster HBar at about 50 lbs on the torque wrench.

Standard Bushmaster stock, buffer and buffer spring.  When the rifle is empty it works fine, nothing grinds or rubs.

Is the bolt dragging on the gas key? Try inserting the bolt carrier alone and sliding it forward. The gas key should not bind on the gas tube.

Nope,

I checked that after I installed the barrel and gas tube, kind of a standard thing.  Like I said, when the rifle is empty it does function checks just fine.

Old bolt and new barrel? Or new bolt and new barrel?

old bolt with new barrel.  It's an older bolt carrier that has the section cut out so the firing pin is exposed.

You need to try a heavier buffer.

ETA - You've gone to a carbine gas system with the same BCG & buffer setup. Need to slow down the cycling.

+1

You may need a heavier buffer or newer enclosed carrier to make up for the lost mass. A headspace check might not be a bad idea either.

Well the buffer and buffer spring are new from Bushy and came with the 6 position stock.

And that would be a standard weight carbine buffer. It may be true, as stated above, that you need to go with an “H” buffer. Or, try an enclosed carrier.

Tried an enclosed carrier from my RRA and worked great for the most part.

Rounds were hanging up on the ramp, but then again the barrel still needs a proper break-in and I was using soft tips.

I quess sometimes the old dog needs to learn new tricks, or get upgraded at least.  Thanks for your ideas guys.
