I'm trying pick out a weapon light for a carbine upper with skinny CAR handguards. I installed a BCM tri-rail which will allow mounting of a light on the left or right of the FSB, and am leaning towards the Surefire Scout mini and standard Surefire Scout. Will barrel shadow be an issue with the mini being mounted on the FSB and if so will the longer Surefire Scout reduce barrel shadow by a noticeable amount? This is going on a duty rifle that will be used indoors/and outside typically not farther than about 50 yards away.
Feel free to suggest other light options but I really prefer to be able to have a tape switch like what comes with the Scout to avoid having to put fingers on the FSB. I would also like to stay around 200 no more than 300 lumen light. Anything more tends to create distraction for me inside buildings with shiny walls. Thanks for the help. |
| Do you have a picture of the setup that you are trying to obtain? If it is a carbine and not a middie I'd go with a full scout to get the extra length out there. Also I'm not sure how it would work for you but there are Haley Strategic forward pushed mounts - I don't think they'd work for what you are going for but they are some kind of an option possibly in the future. |

I can't find a picture of anyone using the BCM tri-rail with a light. The Haley push-forward mount would work just fine on the tri-rail. I will have to measure a tape switch from Surefire thought to make sure it would still be able to reach back to the handguard.
Another idea would be to use the Haley mount with any Surefire light so I'm not stuck with the Scout and it's built in mount... It looks like you can get a tape switch for pretty much any Surefire. http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Tri-Rail-Mount-p/bcm-tri-rail.htm There's the BCM Tri-Rail for reference. |

Just want to point out there is a forum for this:

Do you have to use that Tri-Rail deal? Can you not install a rail and mount the light onto that? Either way, I use a Mini Scout on a Haley Thorntail mount and love it. Super compact for an offset rifle light, and it hasn't budged either. If you only want 200-300 lumens out of your light, then stick with the Mini Scout rather than the full size Scout.

| Just as a point of reference, the end of my muzzle device is 3-3/8 further out than the lense of my light and there is a slight indentation in the outer halo, but its only noticeable at very close proximity to a wall or other flat surface. I wanted a light that would serve as both home defense and long range outdoor indentification, which brought me to the Streamlight TLR-1 HP. It is only 200 lumin so it isn't blinding indoors, but has 46,000 candela that produces an intense, tighter hotspot. At well over 50 yards i am capable of lighting someone up like daylight but at the same time the halo is narrower and doesn't blare wildly and attract unwanted attention. |
