Hey all! Have a friend who wants to mount an Insight Tech M-3 tac light to his Bushmaster Varminter. Upper is postban with a standard (non-railed) float tube, no front sight (shaved FSB) and without a bayo lug. He doesn't want to resort to drilling & tapping the float tube to install a rail... so what no-gunsmithing mount options are out there? Anybody make anything that clamps to the barrel and provides a weaver rail base? All suggestions are welcome; going with a SureFire light/mount is a last resort if there's no way to attach the M3 (which he already owns). |

I wouldn't suggest mounting it to the barrel only. I think the best solution is the under forearm attachment rail. You can find them pretty cheap. I have seen some attachements that are made to mount on the front sight assembly, but i have only seen lasers mounter there, not lights. |

If he's willing to drill two small holes through the FF tube, there is no need to "drill & tap" - the standard AR mount for the M3 uses a back-plate which is threaded for the screws. I used this mount to attach an M3 to a FF tube on one of my DPMS ARs. I didn't have to drill the holes (that FF tube is slotted), but the result would be the same (and your friend would not be limited in his choice of mount location like I was): If he does not want to drill the handguard at all, then I suggest he replace his shaved FSB with a 4-rail FSB and mount the M3 directly to it. |

Why not get a "side mount adapter" that will fit on the upper's picatinny rail? They cost $19.95 from Brownells and take up just one slot on a standard picatinny rail and does not interfeer with your mounted optics. You can then mount the M3 to one side or the other of your upper receiver. I have this same mount on the left side of my DPMS A3 upper and it holds an OP6 Tac Light from Laser Devices. I ran the paddle switch wire forward to the free floating hand guard. I also have an EOTech mounted behind that. MadDog MadDog |
