I'm looking at a few choices for a scope for a AR10.
It's use will be for hunting, varmiting, and perhaps some longer range shooting out to 1000.
The bulk of the shooting will be within 500 though.
The price range I'm looking at is $500-1000 or so.
Current considerations are ;
Vortex pst with lighted reticle 4-16, thinking of just the second focal plane one.
Leupold mark 4 with similar power
Nightforce, their "lower end" one , can't remember the name.
Perhaps others if you have some ideas.

I like the idea of turrets for faster adjustments, but have some concerns of bumping or rubbing them while carrying the rifle in a sling.
Not stuck on the lighted reticle, but that vortex pst one looks cool.
Thanks

I'm leaning towards the Weaver tactical 3-15 myself. Lots of guys love their Viper PSTs, but the 4-16 glass is not as great as the 6-24x which is excessive for a 1000yd rifle. I bought the 2-10 weaver and it has me impressed enough to buy Weaver again.

Forget the PST.

The Burris XTR2 if you want exposed turrets or the NF SHV if you don't. Also look at the Trijicon Accupower 4-16.

Above is good advice.  For about $600 or less, take a look at the capped turret hunting Leupold VX-R scope series, more particularly the 3-9x40 and the 4-12x40.  There are a number of different reticles, including a ballistic version for long range shooting.

But, to make the most of longer range, you probably do need tactical turrets.  I have a VX-R Patrol 3-9x40 with MRAD .1 mil per click tactical turrets (6 mils per rotation will get you to about 700 yards without passing zero on the first rotation), and the Firedot TMR reticle, which has .5 mil hash marks out to 5 mils in each direction and another mark out at 10 mils.  Some claim that the turret knobs should be stiffer, but mine have not moved when using it to hunt.  It's a nice midpriced choice at $600, especially with the motion activated very small .3mil (about 1 MOA) illuminated dot.
