I realize scopes have been handled to death, but there are so many different varieties that I just get confused.  I know this is like asking which is better: Ford or Chevy, or like what is the best: Corvette, Camaro, or Volt, everybody has a different view that is right for them, so I'll give you some background so I hope you can point me in the right direction of what to look at.

I have a Franklin Armory HSC-15 (their version of the AR-15 M-4).  It has a flat top receiver.

I mainly shoot at the range for fun, and the longest range at my place is only 100 yards, but I do believe some of the other close ranges go to 300-500 feet or maybe longer.  I don't have a vision of being a precision shooter, but would like to have decent skills.  I don't shoot competition or 3-gun, mainly because of cost, but it would be nice to be able to try it sometime.  My rifle cost about $1200.  I see scopes that are under $100, $100-$500+, then there are some that cost the same as my rifle, and some that cost 2X-3X what I paid.  I don't need something that good for shooting 3-gun and 100 yards but don't want to spend money I don't really have only to find out it's junk.

I figure I am looking for a scope in the 1-8 range or similar, but have no clue.  I would really appreciate it if someone could point out some nice scopes that don't cost an arm and a leg to get and are pretty easy to learn how to use (dials, zero-set, mil-dots, etc.)  Something that there is a good owners manual for and maybe some You Tube videos to check out, so any assist from those who have a pretty good idea of a scope that isn't too expensive and can be used for close in and semi-distance that I should look at.  I assume it would be a standard type hunting/sniper scope not an ACOG or Red Dot type, but don't really now for sure.  I have a cheap $80 scope that my dad gave me but not really sure how to use it and it doesn't want to set up properly (reviews on it weren't that good either), so looking for something that is worth the money, easy to use for someone who only shoots with it every once in awhile, and is worth the money.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.  Again, sorry if this is an old question that's been covered many times, but it's just too confusing for me to weed through all the information to find something specific for my needs.
