Hey guys. I want to drill another hole in a carry handle (Gasp! ) to get better eye relief on my Colt 3X scope. I understand this is why some receivers were drilled as in the picture. IIRC, a member here posted this pic and I need to know the center to center measurement. I will be drilling it a little smaller, to help eliminate slop - just clearance size for the through bolt, but I would like to know. I've seen several done this way, and they all looked the same - in fact, I believe I had a C7 at one point like this. Anyway, I'm sure I can estimate it, but if someone has an upper like this and could measure it I'd appreciate it.

Wouldn't you be better setting dimension to what will work for you other than what has worked for someone else.  Everyone will have little a different relief and scope isn't what I'd call adjustable the main reason for contemplation.  Basically the same reason I don't own any of the Colt scopes as they simply don't work worth a darn for me and I try and purchase what will.  Never really considered drilling more holes!  So thanks for idea!

I do understand this is the retro forum so a certain look is desired. I also shoot mine not pose with them.  Not saying you do so please don't misinterpret as it could probably be taken that way.  I'm simply saying more adjustablily than another hole makes more sense to me.  Kinda like a 6 position vs a two position stock.  Probably depends on persons eyes and mine are shot.

I would almost think a slot would be more effetive for actual performance shooting but sure wouldn't want to slot or drill anything with value personally.

I don't think a slot would work - I think recoil would cause for and aft movement. You're right, of course about adjusting it to suit myself, it's just a little hard with the pin sticking down to even mock it up. I thought I would go with what has been done before, reasoning that it worked well for them. As I said, I will drill the hole smaller, in an effort to maintain repeatability (an issue with these scopes, and one I believe is mostly because the mounting hole is oversized). I would not do this to a really early receiver - but I think it would make a nice option for the 605. I'm going to see how it shoots with irons first of course. Might even go out this Sunday. (Finally!) I just wanted a starting point.

I believe this is possible but I really kinda doubt it.  Tight is tight.  Especially shooting .223/5.56.  I usually lay and trim electrical tape inside my carry handle under mounts really just to protect the finish and as stated the holes are oversized.  I've never had anything move with normal shooting or loosen once installed permanently.  I have seen it on other's carbines and rifles that weren't tightened properly.  Once tightened properly or where they won't move / loosen I've never seen problem recur.

I've got a couple AR's with optics that only get shot every few years simply due to too many and not my favorite shooters.  They get knocked around a bit in storage but optics haven't moved that I can tell when shooting anyway.  Drop it, hit it and sure it can move with enough force exerted or break.  Maybe on an over gassed carbine as I have a couple that are kinda volatile compared to a rifle system but I'm still doubtful it will be a problem for regular use.  I have more issues with barometric pressure and wind,  shooting light bullets than scopes actually moving.

I believe I'm gonna have to salvage a beater upper just for giggles but would still probably stick with Colt clone scope simply for economics.  Now these I have seen problems with at the expense of wasted ammo resources.
