Alright, well, some extra money came around and I'm trying to decide what to do with it.  About 400$ in amount.  I have a few options and was wondering your guys' opinion on what's best to get.  I'm going to get everything for my AR eventually... but I'd like to get things first that'll be more practical and so on... i.e. buis = essential.

My current setup is a RRA 16" chrome line upper and a stag lower, YHM buis, hogue grip, idf tactical sling.  I have over a thousand rounds of ammo and I have the extra 100$ every month or so to buy some more federal, so I don't want to buy any ammo for the people who would normally recommend doing that.  I have 4 mags, I'm looking at getting more but I'm not sure right now it's necessary.

I had a few options in mind... tell me what you think:

Opt.#1:
(This option allows for a good optic, but leaves me with a bare basic rail/vfg system)
Eotech optic, picatinny rail that mounts to standard handguards, and a KAC VFG, 4 mags.

Opt.#2:
(This setup would keep me bound by using just irons for the time being - I have no quarrel with irons by the way.)
MI Free float carbine rail system,  Tango down vfg, pentagon x3, viking tactics light mount, magpul rail ladders (4), 2 mags.

Or maybe someone has a different idea of what 400$ could be spent modifying the weapon for?  My main reason for the gun is I enjoy maintaining it, shooting it, home defense and safety reasons, WW3, zombies...  etc, I plan on doing many training courses and even blackwater eventually.

Thanks guys I value your time and opinions.  I'm just so torn at the moment!!!  ARs are like Honda Civics... sooo many goodies for them!

I did option 1 first then option 2 later for my first AR (an M4gery). Either way, a light is essential for a HD carbine.

Yeah, so I'm thinking of option 2 first... I've heard mixed opinions on red dots from my friends.  Some say for 300~$ (eotech) to even 400~ for an aimpoint, its not worth the money.  It doesn't improve too much... whereas I hear a good vfg, a tac light, and possibly even a visible laser  would be much better for HD and quick target acquisition, they would be much more beneficial in terms of saving your life in a situation where the bad happens quickly

I shoot fine with irons.  I'm trying to justify a red dot here.  It'll probably come eventually, but how far into my future is unknown at this point with my knowledge of red dots and their profitability on my AR.

If I was LEO or Mil I'd definately get a red dot.

Option 2

I am not sure if $400 gets you all that, but it would be a lot of bang for your buck.

My option (if I were to make a decision to spend $400 on my AR for accessories- only) would be a Laue rail or Daniel Defense at around $300, and the balance on a Troy rear BUIS

Only because it came to exactly $400. This is the strategy of getting the very best money can buy regardless of other factors, and take the next step when the next disposable income becomes available

When you are done, you have the best, and will never regret, or think back "I wish I had done __ differently"

Good luck, Strangler,  and let us know which way you go.

Well I'd be perfectly happy with MI.  I think they make their stuff out of aircraft aluminum.  That seems sturdy enough for me?  Even if I went Mil or LEO and used it in the sandbox.

MI Rail - 160
Tango Down - 60
X3 - 85
Magpul Ladders - 40
Viking Mount - 20
2 Mags - 30

395$ total.  I can actually find mags on the EE for about 11.95 each, but I pretty much rounded everything and excluded shipping, because I'll try and buy everything from the same dealer and save on shipping and it shouldnt be too much.  I figure the above is the best bang for my buck.  An eotech would be good, but why have 1 good thing, when you can have 2-3 (rail for mounting, vfg, and light)?

I already have a YHM rear buis, do you recommend the troy over it?  It seems to work great for me and is sturdy... fits under my cheapy t168 I got from clearview when it was the "new thing" here ;P after that member sandbox review...

But I do understand and completely agree with your mindset.  I never go half - arse on things.  I want to regret nothing on things I really desire.  I don't regret anything with my AR so far and do lots of homework on all my purchases... I'm pretty confident in most of the things I listed especially in option 2.

Sounds like a good setup. If you like irons, stick with them. Target aquisition is faster with a dot sight, but practice will make up most of the difference in speed.

I would get the Eotech first, as you will use it most.

The flashlight next, as its nice to have, but you honestly won't use it much unless you routinely clear buildings.

Get the rail last, as its nice, but you can do the same work without it.

Replace Aimpoint with Eotech, and you get the idea....

Alright, thanks for the info guys.  I guess it's just down to, how much will a red dot help my accuracy/target acquisition speed.

Guess I'll try and find some first hand reviews where Mil/LEO have entered scenarios with, and without red dot optics, and compare them to provide the benefits of having one.

Thanks all.  And Stickman... god.... what a great rifle.  Love that barrel mount, but does that mess up the finish on the barrel, or the accuracy?
