So, I can now find everything I need to build my Early Clone-o-Matic XM variant, except the old-style non-delta handguard ring, which I expect I can find at the Washington Arms Collectors' gun shows in Puyallup---  and the Holy of Holies: the slabside lower. What do y'all think would happen if I took a regular old lower and Dremeled off the reinforcing ribs? Followed by polishing and refinishing, of course. In the photos I've collected, the planform looks very similar, but I haven't actually seen one since about 1987...  Any thoughts?        Did I say "everything"? Except about $300, as of this posting---

If you're talking about the ribs at the rear ring of the reciever, I wish you luck.  Haven't done it myself, but have been told it's a real bitch to do and get right.

If you do get it accomplished, hope you'll post some pics. My own XM177 copy is on an SP1 lower, and since I class 3d the piece 25 years ago, I guess it's going to stay on that lower.  On the other hand, I've got two semi auto rifles built ip as M16 and M16A1 copies that are on current type lowers, and I'd love to have them on A1 type lowers.

Keep us posted

I was looking at the ribs under the ejection port and around the mag catch...   the reinforcement around the rear ring looks to be about the same in the photos I have. The ribs don't look too terribly hard, as the surrounding terrain is mostly flat and could be buffed out with a vertibelt--  but then, I haven't tried it, have I? And I always wanted a $150 paperweight.  But rest assured that the photos will be posted here first, regardless of the outcome! And thanks for your interest, shamayim! Glad to have the input.

i picked mine u pfor $750 a few years ago. THey have no mag fence or any of the raised parts. I even saw one a year ago that had the pin in the buffer tube area. THey can be had, you jsut need to look.

Reading "Dremel" in the BIY forum just ties my gut in knots.

I think the front pivot pin will fall out, as the spring and detent will be gone.

Oh, and don't forget to Dremel that extra aluminum off the front pivot pin lugs.

Looks close, but nope, different.

You're well on your way!

Seriously, you'd have better luck looking for and buying an SP1.

You mean you want to take off the detent rib that holds the front pin in place? What the hell for? That's not an early M16 copy you'd be making; simply an SP1 copy (as he shakes his head in disbelief)

You want an early M16 type lower; you've got to mill the reeinforcing material off the rear ring, square off the underside of the front lugs, and if you want a really early type, mill off the mag release fence--but you sure don't take off the rib that contains the spring and detent.

Here's a link to how I did my early clone.

Yup, you did a really nice job of building a clone of the Colt SP1 commercial lower---but it's not a clone of anything that was used in Viet Nam---it's a dup of what us civil;ians could buy from Colt during Viet Nam

A  " Essential Arms " EA-15 recvr is probably the best starting point, Mill of the raised fences and selector switch stops. The front pin is the bitch to get that early slab side look but it is do able; Use an Air Force M16 upper with the counter bored front pivot pin hole then " This is the hard part " find a Mod 01 front pivot pin !!!
