I want to replace the A2 flash hider with an AAC Blackout.
Not sure how to secure the upper and turn off the FH. Do I use barrel vice jaws or an upper receiver block (internal) or a upper receiver action block (wrap around outside of receiver) ... or any of the above are OK? TIA, -3D |

The recommended procedure is to clamp the barrel in a vise, not the upper. As close to the muzzle as possible w/ barrel protectors of some kind. IMO you should not use any kind receiver action block, you can damage the receiver and/or barrel (people have). I use a regular pair of barrel vise jaws, but a number of people have made their own by drilling two blocks of wood.
The old FS will probably come off easily, a lot of the time just a regular set of vise jaw protectors is enough. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. Unfortunately, so far, no joy. I should mention that this is a Noveske upper with a non QG Blackout FH. I want to put a QD mount on it. Not sure if they may use rockset or something. I clamped the end of the barrel in a vice with soft jaws but it would spin no matter how tight I made it. So I tried some aluminum barrel vice jaws and same thing. The upper would spin. Damn aluminum embedded itself into the finish too. Luckily, I was able to get the aluminum off with CLP and a brass brush. Fuuuuuug..... May have to send it to Noveske to do. -3D |

You need some powdered rosin. I run into the same situation occasionally, the rosin has always worked.
The aluminum marks are normal and easy to remove. I would not normally expect an A2 FS to be permanently attached. Since you know who built the upper you should call and ask. |
