What are the various methods of attachment of handguards/rails to the upper reciever?  I've got a Stag model 3 with Diamondhead handguards and am thinking about holding on to the vertical foregrip to twist off the A2 hider.  I've never assembled an AR before, and it isnt obvious how the handguards are attached.  Do different systems attach differently, or is there some kind of standard?

Diamond head shouldnt be free float, so press down the delta ring and take them off

If have a problem with delta ring, they have a tool that helps out.

If you have 2 piece plastic hand guards, the delta ring pushes down to release them. If it's a 1 piece railed free float, it should unscrew from the barrel nut. There is probably an anti rotational screw on the bottom or in some, in back of the barrel nut.
A 2 piece free float, just remove the screws holding it together.

The proper way to remove a flash hider is the use of a barrel vice. You casn also use leather in the haws of a bench vise to hold the barrel. You have to watch torqueing a flash hider. It can turn the barrel slightly in the receiver. Your front sight will be canted.

If you are planning to take the try and twist the A2 off be very careful how and where you clamp the upper to do so.

Well, I'm thinking that my vertical grip is attached to my non free floating handguards.  The handguards are secured by the delta ring which is aligned with the barrel nut/gas tube.  So if I twist the flash hider while holding the veritcal grip, it shouldnt pass any torque along to the upper reciever.

i would advise against that.

you should get a barrel vise and do it properly

It will pass torque on to the upper receiver.
