Simply compress the Delta ring (I generally do the bottom side first) and pull the HG out from the rear, turn rifle around and compress the other side and remove the top HG.

There's detailed info up top under the "INFORMATION" tag........

The ARMY way according to the manual is the Buddy Method... but my buddy (wife) was not too much help.  There is also a tool you can buy or make but I've never used one.  I have found that a couple loops of Paracord with slip-knots help.  slip the knots over the delta ring with the loose ends on either side of the rifle... snug 'em up then pull them toward the back.  Good Luck!

The way I do it is remove the upper from the lower and sit the rear of the upper on my leg vertically with the sights pointing towards my left.Get a choke hold on the delta ring from the underside of the upper with my right hand and pull the delta ring down, then I remove the handgaurds with my left.
With that said this may not work for everybody...Im a ham fisted, corn fed country boy.

If you or a friend have a torch and a vice you can make one of the removal tools . it took me 5 min, looks just like the ones you buy only I put the clear tubing all the way down the rods , these make it a snap!

You can buy a handguard removal tool from Midway for about $15.  Money well spent...

Another method to make things easier is to take a section of bicycle inner tube and fit it over the delta ring; this will increase your grip nicely and make one-handed handguard removal easier.

*note - I didn't come up with this, merely passing it along.

A quick improvised tool is to use a pair of 'channel-lock' pliers that have plastic coated handles.  Just close the handles around the delta ring and squeeze and pull down, then have your buddy pull the hardguards free.  Wish I had a picture, but I think you know what I mean.  Works for me.

I bought the tool for $10.95 so that means I'm a weak girly man! But you know one thing that sets men apart from Apes is the use of tools.

I'll betcha you couldn't remove my M500A without a tool. In fact, I only bought the tool because I couldn't. Once I had the tool, I started using it all the time because it works so good.

Actually, the thing that sets us apart from apes is the ability to think, and find better, easier, and cheaper ways to do things- instead of just following the normal and buying the one time use, weekend warrior tool.

I may not be a but I find the right tool to do the job. I don't know but I take my guns apart often to clean them inside and out. Thanks for the input!!!!

I usually don't have a problem pulling the ring back by hand  , but I have an
RRA carbine that forced me to buy the tool . It actually bent the tool arms
compressing the ring . One of these days I plan to put a float tube on it and be done
with it .......

But first I have to get over my recent 5.45 AK kick

GREAT INFO!!!!
I just made one out of 1/4" Square SS.  I welded it up a little and sandblasted to make it a bit prettier!!!  It took me about 45mins, and I used a 29 1/2" long piece.  Now I just need to get some rubber!!!

I will post a pic later.

I can do it by hand alone with any handguards (including the M500 ones on one of my guns). But I just bought the tool from Bushmaster, and it's a helluva lot easier and quicker. Worth the money in my opinion.

Now that you mention it, the problem I had with my M500A was on a RRA carbine.

Speaking of handguards, I have a 20" Bushmaster.  The long handguards seem a little flimsy compared to the handguards on Bushy's 16" model.  I assume that's just because they are so much longer and are only supported at each end, not in the middle.

Yes? No?
12/1/2004 9:52:30 PM EDT
[#22]
They are longer, but they should be supported down the sides where the halves touch with "bumps and cups" that interlock. But it is normal for them to move around a slight bit, same with carbine/M4 guards. If it bothers you, you can use a bit of black rubber innertube, or wind it with a little paracord. Sometimes it helps to trim off all the flashing (extra plastic on the edges that seeped through the mold halves) to make it fit as snugly together as possible, and so the handguard cup and delta ring can get the maximum grip on each end.

I did as you said, trimmed the little burrs off with a razor.  One thing I noticed and remembered reading about in Bushmasters catalog is that my rifle (20) has fiberglass handguards, while the 16" rifle I was comparing it to has platic.  I guess that is the main reason why they feel different.
